We\'re all the same under the skin...

Many sailing boats on the water can (and do) motor faster than a "small sailing boat" from MG's day would sail. The difference between power and sail at the "great white whale" end of the sailing boat spectrum is less distinct nowadays, in my humble opinion.

Ain\'t that the truth!

I'm fairly staggered at the speed and horsepower of the "great white whales" (lovely phrase, may I borrow it?)

It's fair to say that their hull form is more or less that of a power boat anyway, so maybe I should not be surprised, but very often they seem to be being "driven" flat out at six or seven knots or rather more. Our old girl, which was actually reviewed by MG in the 30's YM, is good for about 3.5, flat out!

I suspect that Kelvins had a Brough Superior SS100 in mind - which would now be worth more than the boat, probably!

In today's Honda Fireblade era, we have a Cunning Plan, should funds ever permit, to replace 15 ponypower of ancient Volvo, as purveyed by the Bolinders Company in 1967, to replace 7hp of Kelvin, with about 50 hp of motor car diesel engine driving an hydraulic pump and twin folding screws, as found on such top flight hotshot gaffers as Transcur and Bona, both of which can be seen racing about, stopping dead and spinning on a 5p when under power - not that they normally are!

Faster! Faster! If we could make the dizzy speed of five knots, we could motor into and out of the Deban and the Alde against the tide!
