Why don't most boats blow up eventually?

While we are on about gas, what do lead acid batteries create and do they need venting when charging?

Hydrogen and oxygen if they "gas" and in exactly the right proportions for maximum effect if the mixture is ignited..

Hydrogen diffuses and escapes very quickly. Safe venting probably advisable but I suspect that there is seldom any provision to do so.

On my boat the battery ( charged by solar panel & sometimes outboard coil ) is under the forepeak double bunk, so I fitted a ventilator hose from it to the vent in the anchor locker above one's toes.

I did label it 'danger, hydrogen' , but my ex- used to smoke, which rather encouraged me to open the forehatch; if it was raining she got the message.
