Why do we pile our anchor and chain on the ground?

Why do we do this? Every boatyard I've been in has it's share of pallets parked under the noses of boats and filled with anchor and chain. But I've never thought to ask why, just taken it for granted that this is the thing to do. Is the idea to stop the pallet floating away, to prevent the grass growing or something more esoteric?

Does it perhaps allow the anchor locker to get aired, and any gunge on the chain to dry out so it can be cleaned?

Or perhaps it is to allow the winter rains to wash off the salt?

I certainly don't - I range my chain along length of boat and back in rows. That way I can check it, touch up paint markings, let rain wash it off, reduce "collective" corrosion that happens when all piled up.

Plus it looks much better and seamanlike !! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I do the same as refueller ,the thieves seem to appreciate it as they can compare anchors, steal the best.

I have distinct advantage - my own private boat yard. Access by appointment / friends only. Unless of course you want to run the gauntlet of 3 large dogs ! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Must admit I don't do this for one reason. Rodents. An anchor chain is an easy route for rats or mice, onto your boat. Once they're in it's a hell of a job getting rid of them. If you think your boatyard doesn't have rats then you haven't looked hard enough. They are everywhere!

Don't know about the anchor chain thing, We keep ours onboard unless its in the water.

'I have been wondering that? why does everyone lift there boats out?'

Good question that. I can think of no proper reason other than having to much money to chuck at boatyards, travel lifts or you like to spend a fortune on antifoul every year. When you are paying for an anual mooring/berth why do you need pay for storage on the hard as well????????

Get out there sailing 12 months of the year mun, winter sailing is cold but fun!

When I worked on small GRP fishing boats we only ever came out to have work done which we couldn't do while in the water. We dried out over two tides against a wall or something to anti foul when it was needed, about every 18 monthe to two years. Never had a problem with osmosis either - so it aint that.

Q. Why do only yachts get osmosis? Never seen a GRP fishing boat with it or having its gel coat removed or being sprayed with awl-grip etc.

well after nearly 4 years in the water, I need to lift out this year. primarily because I some osmosis repair to do......

I've been in for last 3 years, but A/F is worn a bit thin now, so I shal lift out, clean & A/F this winter in the hope I'll get another 3 years before I need to A/F again. It's great being in a creek with loads of freshwater piling off the mountains!

ha ha ha

I measured 3.1 kts the other day streaming past the hull!

But like you it is fresh and my boat has been clean for 2 seasons now, though like you she is looking shabby too.

We only get the boat out for a few days each year. This year I did the anchor and chain in a pile thing becuase all the other boats around me did. Then I felt a bit of a prat becuase I would not know what to say if anyone asked me why I did it and so I put it back in the locker.

I do it just to show I have a manly length of thick chain. Establishes the anchoring pecking order in the yard.

Because that is the way it has always been. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
