Why do they call boat's she?

Boats are called she because they are fickle, liable to be displaced by a younger and racier model, and use up all your available income.

Not she in French.

I seem to remember reading, poss. on this forum, someone saying that he spotted a very nice wooden yacht on a pontoon in France. He was admiring her when the owner and his wife arrived. Thinking that his basic French was up to it, he tried to say how beautiful she was and he'd like to give her a test sail.

"Elle est belle. Je voudrais lui donner un "................ He stopped at that point as the gentleman was beginning to look a bit angry. Dawning realisation that there was only one female present near "le bateau".... hurried exit with apologies.

Probably apocryphal.

I remember that story - I think it was the confessional. Seem to recall that chap saw Monsieur and Madame rowing to a pretty boat and he called out, "Elle et tres Belle" to be rewarded by the chap scowling and the lady waving and blowing kisses.

Not only boats but anything that gives a man a lot of pleasure, a lot of worry and a lot of expense. As I often explain here the English are logical.

It would seem boats are called "she" because of a supposed ritual of tying a virgin to the bow in order to make a sacrifice to whatever gods were feared. When the poor victim died, following the "maiden voyage" (geddit) her unfortunate spirit entered the vessel. That partly explains the invariably busty figurehead on boats. Clearly doesnt explain why the Clyde and Liverpool had ship related industries, as virgins there are otherwise known as "liars" ....
