Can anyone tell me more about the International Certificate of Competence please. It seems that this is what some charter companies, especially in Europe, are looking for. Does a new exam need to be sat for this if one holds a Day Skipper certificate?

Not if it's DS practical, no. If you don't have the practical you will need to do a littel boat handling test. If you want to use your boat on French canals you need to take a little CEVNI test too. i came to the conclusion this latter was to warrant you were actually breathing, because it's no test of intellect!

Don't need bits of paper for most sailing. Do need experience. By doing aRYA practical course you get experience in a boat other than your own, often in an area other than your own, and practice techniques you might not get a chance to do in your own area- for instance, I've never picked up a bouy, anchored, moored onto pilings etc around where I sail, but did on my Day Skipper course.

You can do ICC as a seperate assessment.
However, if done correctly, it's a bit more than "you will need to do a littel boat handling test".
DS Practical qualifies for ICC, but CEVNI is an add-on.
Rules on ICC are changing from end December 04, which is why many are rushing to do it.
Most countries in Med & Continent use ICC as a check on competance - particularly if there is an 'incident'.
