Why did he do this??

Suicidal........It does happen...equipment failure (probably difficult to prove now) or some other form of mental instability / medical issue. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I think he was trying to turn away to port but the turning circle was just too wide. When he hits the ferry the rudder is still over and the boat is still turning. So he is definitely not "cutting across".

I dont' think he is 'turning into the ship' - I think he is trying to get out of the way but he has left it too late and his turning circle is too big.

Um - which way would you say the ship was going? To me it looks as if he crashed into its starboard side. Maybe he expected it to give way to him and realised too late that it wasn't going to.

I would suspect that he got confused as to which way to push the tiller.

The two motor vessels were end on or nearly end on. He should have turned to starboard and would have passed clear port to port.

Once the rudder went the wrong way it was all too late.

It's hard to tell from the clip how much of the camera movement indicates the direction of the ferry, and how much is the camera sweeping and zooming in on the yacht.

If that was really the starboard side of the ferry he hit then there seemed to be a lot of sideways slip by the ferry, moving rapidly in his direction. Maybe he wasn't aware of that.

There is a lack of fixed reference points in the clip.

Of course he could just be retarded! the guy on the boat suggested he was crazy, i've known people to jump under buses as well! or how about he was skint and wanted to claim on his insurance? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Have you? I've never known anyone who jumped under a bus, but I know two bus jokes:

1) Man in Stamford Hill was knocked over by a bus. While waiting for the ambulance a passerby offered his coat and asked the man if he was comfortable. "No", was the reply, "but it's a living".

2) "Excuse me sir, would you show me the shortest way to Brompton Cemetary?". "Certainly", replied Gus, and pushed him under the nearest omnibus.
