I'm sat here thinking about something someone asked me yesterday:

"Oh, you've got a boat, what is the attraction then??"

Do you know for the life of me I couldn't round it up in just a few sentences:

"Well, it's the freedom, but then again it's the intricacies of learning about how to Boat safely. Then theres the technology. Then theres the skill of manouvering 12.5 tonne on a slippy surface with no brakes. Its the comaraderie. Its the people. Its the beautiful places you can visit and see from a totally different perspective. Its the thrill of just "getting there". Its the quality time with the family. Its weekends spent doing nothing. Its being away from the garden. Its being out of touch. Its the rush of blood when you spend money at the swindlery knowing you've just been ripped off. Its the delight in a a bit of chrome you've just polished back from dullness, its this, its that, its the other"

See what I mean, what is it for you?? Paul

I always explain that its the freedom of life on the ocean wave, freedom from all the rules and regulations that bind us on land and freedom from the stresses and pressures of work. Basically, aside from a very few restrictions, in a boat you can go where you like, when you like and at whatever speed you like

"at whatever speed you like" sept for Oldgit/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I agree with Pauls and your comments couldnt have put it better my self.

"freedom of life / freedom from all the rules"
You want to try doing your boating on Windermere! there aint no freedom from rules there. The wardens hide behind islands with there new toy speed camera, and will pull you over with a "is this your vessel sir" attitude for the most ridiculous reasons. Like spilling your beer whilst ski-ing, or spending too long pumping out your heads, or washing your boat with there hose pipe for too long or.....God I hope there not on line.

My sympathies. You'll have to venture out to sea then

What and miss all the fun of high speed chases, with flashing blue lights and the theme tune of miami vice ringing in your imagination. And having to dodge drunkards in hire boats or ruddy great pleasure steamers not to mention jet ski's playing chicken on your wake. And I am not even going to start about the raggies.

Well, you freeze your nads off, whilst lying under the boat, sanding the hull. Getting covered in blue filth.

Freeze your nads off, whilst crouching down changing the oil in the stinking good for nothing legs!

Freeze your nads off, polishing and waxing the boat.

Freeze your nads off, lying in the engine rooom in a space you can barely fit your shoe in let alone your whole body.

Basically your freeze your nads off! And it costs you a fortune for the privilage to do so.

However, once you get out in the summer, all is forgotten, and you dream of having a even bigger boat. Which madly enough, would mean freezing your nads off even more!!!! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Ah! But when I lived at the side of the Thames as a kid, I didn't have a boat then.

Now its the wide open sea for me. Yippee!
