Who's sank a boat?

Re: Who\'s sank a boat?

I sank a racing eight when at college... Getting out at Abingdon lock and my foot slipped off the seat ftame and not surprisingly went straight through th 3mm cedar veneer skin...

Popular? Moi?

Then there was the Sportyak, and an Enterprise, and a Fireball, and another rowing dinghy...

Re: Who\'s sank a boat?

When I sailed my nephew's 420 with a friend in a nice F4 years ago, my nephew forgot to mention the encounter he had had the week before with an unmoving wave breaker. The casing for the centre board turned out quite leaky after we hit a couple of waves. We managed to get back to the beach with no freeboard left and had to continue emptying it until we finally dragged it on the beach to let the rest of the water out.

The week after that, while towing the 420 to a wharf where the leaks would be fixed, another car crashed into it and it was no more. We might have left it to sink just as well, instead of sailing very slowly back to the shore.

Re: Who\'s sank a boat?

Re sinking rowing eights, a mate of mine at uni was cox of the 2nd Eight during a race on the Thames, on the tidal section where the tide was flowing rather strongly.
He mis-judged the tide and they clobbered a large steel mooring buoy head on, going at full power, with the result that the Eight disintegrated somewhat spectacularly.
The eight rowers just managed to get their feet out of the shoes before it sank, and they were swimming in the river in mid winter..... whereas my mate somehow managed to clamber up on to the mooring buoy without even getting his toes wet, only to hear death threats from his crew as they disappeared off down stream at a rate of knots.....
There was a happy ending to this story though, in that they got a nice new whizzbang carbon Eight to replace the old rather tired wooden Eight.
But this was what my pal subsequently put on his CV and job applications re most notable achievement while at uni - and it worked well for him!
