I ll be there around 8...9am at the fuel station for filling Blue Angel.
Our permanent berth is in Salerno old town,
We ll be around the coming months

What are your plans Bart? Italy for the summer and then back to Montenegro?
Looks like a great location you are in at the moment....

The initial plan was to sail back to Monopoly for rebuilding the gunwale, in winter, but so far no reaction from 2 yards on the other side of Italy. So it looks that we will stay here for longer, also consult yards in Naples region.
It is here indeed very nice, Amalfi bay, Capri, Ischia, fantastic scenery, very different from what we have seen before, but very interesting for thorrow exploration by boat,
And for next summer, how about Sardegna ?

Well, if you would choose to go that route, we will be able to arrange some joint cruises at 2 digits speed, for a change...!
And needless to say, it would be a great pleasure to have BA and her very pleasant crew around my cruising grounds. :encouragement:

PS: coming to think of it, the yard I normally use down there is also fully capable to deal with wood construction/repair, and is equipped to handle (and also shelter) boats even bigger than BA.
If you are interested to consider that alternative, drop me an email and I can put you in touch with them.
Actually, for obvious logistic reasons, it wouldn't be easy for them to come to see BA in advance and give you some quotations.
But the yard manager occasionally flies to Rome, and maybe he can find an occasion to come to Salerno from there...

Hi Bart,

Not sure if Milo is around, or out cruising. His berth is just three boats down from me. We will be arriving back next Tuesday evening and then setting off Wednesday morning for a two week two day cruise down the Cliento coast to Tropea, then across to Aeolian Isles, with a couple of days in Palermo and Cefalu, then back to the Aeolian isles before heading home.. Then we will be back again for another two week cruise from 22nd August - 5th September, when will be cruising all the usual suspects in the locale as described in my three MBY articles earlier this year. Maybe we can catch up then?

Yes the scenery and islands are fabulous, which is why we decided to permanently base ourselves here. Look forward to hearing how you enjoy the marina in Salerno port. The old town is a shortish walk away and is well worth a visit with its charming back alleys, and buzzy small family restaurants and bars.

Fuel in the marina as you no doubt know is the cheapest in the area at ''only'' €1.44, it is at least 10 cents more expensive anywhere else as far as I know!

we have been around Aeolian, and this was really exiting (as you probably know)
on the NW side of Vulcano is a cave where Blue Angel fits in !
on the SW side of Lipari are 2 small tunnels where you can pass with the tender,
but the most exiting was our night passage along the (semi) active vulcano on Stromboli,
the sight of eruptions in the night, was very impressive

If you do Sicily, try to pass along Toarmina on the east coast, acording some the nicest place in Sicily,
stay on anker south of Isola bella,
VERY VERY nice!
Avoid Riposto ! not nice + terribly expensive !

we are in Amalfi - Capri - Ischia region, until 14/8, and then again 21/8-28-8 and 2/9 - 9/9

yes we have discovered quite a few nice spots / anchorages
especially around Ischia,
much more quite than Capri,

currently I'm in Sorrento marina di Cassano (surprisingly nice)
tonight Marina Amalfi,
tomorrow Marina Maiori
and than back in Salerno for my kids to go home and take new guests onboard.

are there other nice Marina's around that you can recomand ?

Bart, I would be keen to hear more about the Marina di Cassana, as we have never tried Sorrento yet. In Amalfi, are you berthing with the Coppolas? If so, give my best wishes to the owners Guilio and his brother Antonio (who is fighting Chrone's Disease). Probably my favourite marina is Procida. Very quiet and few tourists and a great place to visit Ischia from. The manager there is called Francesco, and he is incredibly friendly and speaks excellent English. Let's make sure we meet up somewhere together at the end of August or beginning of September when we are both in the area.

Marina di Cassana is nice, its like a small village around the marina,
my kids went with the tender to Marina Piccolo, but liked Cassana much more
I was berthed between two Benetti's and 80ft Princess, Technema and sunseeker on the same quay, so the surrounding was nice ;-)

in Amalfi I'm with Aniello, also a very nice guy,
although today there is interestingly a new Canados, a San Lorenzo, a Cerri marine, and a custom Feretti on Copolla's quay ;-)

thanks for the pointer to Procida,
sailed a long Procida yesterday, and from a distance it looks indeed very nice

I'll post here every now and then, so lets catch up when we can.

Original home of our Navigator ... some nice sailing around there indeed!!

Yes, we ve seen a few boats like yours, was the original yard from this region?

But its crowded here with Itama's and Aprea mare's in all flavours and sizes.
In one way or the other, these boats perfectly fit the scenery,
Now I know where Portofino's got his adoration from :)

Sounds like an interesting summer ahead for you folks, as usual.
I didn't hear about the gunwale damage, hope not too bad? I guess it can't be, or you wouldn't be cruising on without repair.
Sardegna sounds like a good plan, we know some nice locals there :)

Crikey! Paid approx €0.60 / litre last week (Rep. of Ireland) .... even with my little KAD300's, cruising the Med would be quite a bit more expensive!

I finished the best part of 7000ltrs Montenegro diesel at 0.49e, on my way to Salerno !
now I'm on regular diesel here in Italy 1.44 (Marina arechi) up to 1.78e or 1.58 for >1000l at marina Amalfi

its very frustrating with all the 'SIP" fuel stations here, (detax diesel at approx 0.6e for the prof boats; many big taxi boats, or charter yachts)

remember I mentioned before about rotten patches of the wooden gunwale,
(moisture inside / lack of ventilation)
we repaired some of it, but now we want to do that thorrowly,
more (old) info about that in the BA rebuild threat, but unfortunately that is without pics at the moment

and at the same occasion replace the plywood deck, and place new teac on top,
so quite a big job,

Wow B, I just checked on the maps, and it seems you made a roughly 600nm trip.
Which means 60 hours @ 10 knots (to keep it simple) - i.e. 100 or so LPH.
Either you cruised a fair bit above D speed, or BA is burning much more than I had in mind...?!

Ref. detax fuel (actually called "SIF" in IT), you could be entitled to that if BA is still registered as commercial (or possibly she isn't anymore?) and you are willing to deal with some IT bureaucracy...

That must be some difference to stomach! One good thing about Ireland is our low duty tax on diesel (agri) for marine use....we just need more sunshine :D

Glad to see you guys are making good use of BA as usual! My regards

We actually made 700nm to Salerno,
most of it we did at 11kn, and some night saling at 10kn
at 11 kn consumtion is around 8,3l / nm
at 10 kn its is around 7,5l/nm
there was also some consumption from the genny's
and we didn't run her empty obviously ;-)
we didn't consume the whole 7000l, (including bladder tanks) wrong use of words

yes I meant SIF
we changed to private Belgium registration 2,5Y ago, was much more easy in Croatia.
and we didn't need commercial reg for bunkering detax fuel in PM as you know.
running commercial has become much more complicated all over europe, so we dropped that.
