The Gangway Guards were mature/elderly men, very friendly, and to be honest not too confidence inspiring in view of their role. They used to do their shift changeover in the ship's galley because it was amidships near the gangway head. The Guard going off duty would pass a grubby old log book recording visitors and the revolver and holster over to his relief. Those are my lasting memories from 60 odd years ago..Oh! and the stink of onions, as we loaded about 20 tons of them into the 'tween decks of number 2 hold...
