Went in for a snorkel today in Sines, very hot day, while in I thought the hull looks a bit on the slimey side so I took a scrubbing brush to it. Result lovely and clean again.

The downside is the antifoul now looks very thin and patchy in places and bare in some, I guess my winter will be spent regularly snorkelling and scrubbing from now on

Was it a mistake to start so early?

With most eroding antifoulings a rub with the hand is enough. With the Greek stuff we are using this year even that is too much, a blue hand is the usual outcome. We used to do the top 12 inches at the waterline with hard that could be scrubbed to remove the worst of the fouling.

Looks even worse today with many totally bare patches, heyho a lift and wash off apply some more antifoul and that'll be that for next year, in the meantime a bit of fun in the water keeping it cleanish

Never mind - not the problem that UK sailors suffer- having to chip off years and years of non-eroded antifouling.
I've found that fouling which doesn't come off with a good quick sail is best removed with the soft side of kitchen scourer.
I've been very satisfied with the one coat of Greek antifouling used the last couple of years - just put 2/3 coats on high-wear areas such as waterlines and keel leading edges. Hard anti-fouling just doesn't stay clean, I've found.

Well it hasn't turned out to be the disaster I anticipated, after that scrub in Sines the weed and slime slowly came back and I snorkelled and scraped it in mid December and again yesterday. There is no antifoul left now but nothing is growing very quickly anyway. By the time I get back to home waters it'll probably be just starting to show some growth again but I can dry out there and tart it up once more.

I read the first one and thought bluddy hell he is on his way back, then thought hot and sunny in Sines in January then looked at the date!

Haha, even though its been the coldest January here for a long while its still shorts weather but alas from the end of next week I'll be looking for a window of opportunity to head north aiming to get back to Portugal then Spain what's the chances of that coming good I wonder

Do let us know when you set off. Presume you're waiting for a break in the northerlies, altho you could keep a stop in Madeira in reserve if tired of beating!!
NOAA indicating storm 961mb leaving Newfoundland on the 16th!!
