Whoo`s going to Oostende vor Anker then

Decision made:

- Thursday looks marginal - Friday a 'no-no' (and uncomfortable in Ostend to boot).
- As other half has to work Monday, this leaves us Saturday and Sunday.
- Going over on Saturday only to head back on Sunday seems somewhat pointless.

So, we'll confine ourselves to pottering about in local waters Saturday/Sunday.
As this may very well be our last year in the land of shallow brown water we might as well explore some bits we've neglected these past years.

Is Tanner still crewing

now you've all gone and worried me... Passage Weather (only real forecast for the middle of the north sea as opposed to either coast) shows 25kts up the chuff for the run to Oostende and some SWlies on Tuesday to waft us home. Know what you mean, Will, about it being a bit rolly with the wind astern but we'll put it on the quarter and take a couple of longish downwind tacks into the tide to hold us on a reasonable track. May still need the bucket!

25kts NW for us means headsail only - easy sailing for the most part - prob feel like 15kts apparent when running downwind...

am I missing something?

Simon, I don't think you're missing anything (wind up the chuff would have meant just headsail for us too).
And it would probably make for a great boys WE, if I were sailing with an all boys crew.
Forecasts appear to change significantly every 12hrs (so much for computer models).
Having been stuck in Ostend because of the weather more times than I care to remember and with the wife having to work on Monday we're just not taking any chances.
If you have the luxury of time and you can afford to hang around in Ostend till Tuesday I don't see why you shouldn't have a great trip.
Say 'Hi' to Robert for us.

Sleigh ride sailing, great fun in the right boat and it sounds perfect for The Kipper, long keel, heavy displacement, first reef in at 20 knots. But we have a family rule that says don't set off if it's six or more - I would but I'm a man (honest).

Given some of our experiences of the inshore waters forecasts, I would say change that to a five.
We got battered by 45 kt winds on the approach to Plymouth last summer having got a forecast saying 3-4 occasionally 5!! when we left for the trip.
We also heard Thames give a four to five as we rounded Maplin heading from the Thames to The Crouch in a seven a few years ago. Shouting at the VHF helps a bit in such circumstances.

We're wimping out. Dunno if the tissue paper mainsail can cope. (It's done an awful lot of miles and is allowed to feel a bit tired)
