Forgive my ignorance please - but who/what is the red/white buoy on the south side of Buxey (Ron Pipe) named after ?

And, where is the wreck off the mouth of the Roach located in relation to its buoy ? Directly under ? Cutting the corner at high water looked inviting but discretion seemed the better bet.

I believe Ron was one of the Crouch boatmen, who died a few years ago. I'm sure someone else knows more.

Note that the Ron Pipe Buoy is on a long chain, so is at significantly different positions each time you pass it - sometimes it is in rather shallow water! It's safer to the north of it near LW.

We regularly sail inside (ie to the south of) the isolated danger buoy by the Roach, and haven't crunched yet. It marks a sunk fishing boat, the Pinto. Just keep a few boat lengths away - either side, and you should be OK.

Ron Pipe was the local waterman who owned the steel barges & crane moored by Pile House near Royal Corinthian YC, now owned by Harry Lymer.
With his brother Mick, he did much of the towing, dredging & nav mark laying on Crouch & approaches for many years. Not a very talkative person but very well known and liked.
For a while after his death, a pair clogs appeared on the bouy, indicating that Ron had popped his.

Ron also laid and maintained all the moorings in Paglesham on behalf of the RSA and, I think, the moorings directly operated by the yard.

The modern Ron Pipe is Harry.

I like Harry, he keep san Old gaffer in Burnham on his grace and favour moorings.

Harry bought the business from the Pipes.
