Who was the first person to circumnavigate the globe?

Apparently it was the Chinese in 1411 - long before anybody else. Quite a big fleet of ships they went to Ireland, America N & S into the Pacific via Asia and the Straights of Magellan.

A fleet of some 80 boats and some brilliant celestial navigation methods. Markers of their visit to the East Coast USA long before Columbus or any of the others got there are still around. In fact the chart that Columbus used was taken from the Chinese world chart... Not a lot of people know that!

Michael

PS. The admiral of this fleet was one 'Zheng' - so there is little doubt he was the first true circumnavigator and all our basic world charts are in some small way derived from his work - interesting huh?

Re: None of those! It was St Brendon the Voyager (Ex Garddfon Monastry)

He left the Garddfon in October 530 AD

Is that the Garddfon pub in Y Felinheli? I didn't know it had been there that long!!!!

I knew it was the crew of Magellans's ship, but why De Elcano in particular? Was he on the bowsprit when they got back, and therefore first over the line?

One of Magellan's ships, that is. Magellan's ship, the Concepcion, never made it.

The captain is an icon for the whole crew, I suppose. Alternatively, consider how the crew come ashore - surely it is the captain's prerogative to be the first to step out of the boat?

More probable the crew threw him out the moment they hit shore - thereby awarding him the credit.
