Hi All,

I know that insurance does get discussed fairly frequently on the forum, I have just done a forum search and can see than many liveaboards are recommending Pantaneus.

We are about to start our cruising adventure this May and plan to spend the next 5 years cruising the Baltic this summer before heading south..... and maybe west! Our current policy with GJW expires in May so I need to check out the key players offering liveaboard/cruising cover and choose wisely.

Ideally I'd like to check out at least 3 of the most appropriate insurers so if forumites can recommend who else should I call other than Pantaneus and what features of the policy would you recommend are included.

Thanks a million for your help

Try Bishop Skinner. They are able to offer increased cover for personal effects (athough excluding valuables) and also medical, although we did not take the latter as we thought it too expensive. We have self insured for medical and also used EHIC and we are well ahead financially.

Could I ask who you use?

I imagine that'd be Plan B.

As to the OP's question, another vote for Bishop Skinner (BlueFin). This is in no way to denigrate their opposition, as I have little experience of them, but have had 11 entirely satisfactory years with BS. They're very responsive to e-mail queries. One factor (no doubt in common with some other companies) is that the longer you're with them the cosier the relationship seems to get: fewer extra conditions, greater trust, etc. That obviously takes time to build up but, all else being roughly equal, is worth having. (It's certainly deterred me from much shopping around.)

Not sure exactly what it is you want (i.e. do you mean medical insurance) but if talking about boat insurance only we found your current insurer GJW excellent. No problem with being a liveaboard. A lot of other Liveaboards also used them

To clarify I was looking for cover for the boat itself and contents and personal effects on the basis that we would be shorthanded (2 up) most of the time and living aboard permanently cruising the Baltic, Med etc. I assumed that I would need to sort medical covered separately.

What other features should I look to include?

As we have insured with GJW for the last 2 years since changing our boat I will definitely ask them

Thanks again

By self insure I mean that we tucked away the cash we would have spent on insurance to use if we actually needed to pay for treatment. We are away ahead of the game, even taking the usual ailments of old age into account.

We're with Towergate, cheaper than Pantaneus. Claims handling quick and excellent.

+1 for Towergate. They were the only company to give the hull value in €'s as we bought in €'s at 1.45 to the £. This was an important factor when the € was creeping towards parity. Thankfully the claims dept. has not been tested.
