At the height of the gale, the harbourmaster radioed a coastguard on the spot and asked him to estimate the windspeed. He replied he was sorry, but he didn't have a guage. However, if it was any help, the wind had just blown his Land Rover off the cliff (Aberdeen Evening Express)

Yep - the wind is as strong as it is!

Whatever the "guage" says matters not. It is the amount of sail or how close you are to that rocky lee shore that is important!

normally two guages
there is either too much or not enough

funny you mention it. Fitted an instrument a couple of weeks ago after 3yrs without one, found it indispensible
