Have been at sea for the last 32 years, since i left school at 16, been everywhere and seen plenty. Presently do 10 weeks on, 10 weeks off. Being away is bad but having 10 week holidays are great.
And because i'm out of the country for more than 183 days a year don't have to any income tax.

Hi Andrew, are you on the deckside or in the pit?
I've also been more or less at sea for the last 30 years, but for the last 10 haven't mangaged to qualify for SED as I couldn't jump through all of the taxmans hoops! One year about 250 days in the North Sea on a DP boat, but because she didn't actually go into foreign ports to do our crew changes although we were transferred there by crew-boats, the taxman said I didn't have the required 2 foreign ports! I was not a happy teddy!
10 weeks on sounds a bit rough, but 10 weeks off sounds marvellous.

Hi Paul. Deck side, well actually am the Old Man. Haven't paid income tax for the last 8 years, which isn't to be sneezed at. Though in the past have had the same problem as you, lots of time outside the UK but no visits to forgein ports.

Moved from Northern Europe (i.e. lived and worked in France, Germany, Great Britain, travelled all over Europe) because I thought it bloody stupid to have the central heating on for 9months a year.

Now we have occasional heaters and occasionally the fireplace on for 3 months a year.

50% of the time our winter temperatures are equal or higher than the summer temperatures for London, Paris and Frankfurt. Don't wear a coat any more, hell haven't even got one!

Best regards from sunny Cape Town.

Hi to Capetown.
My best ever DP boat job was supposed to be 6 weeks off South Africa, but due to circumstances outside our control (Charterer had problems elsewhere), we spent 5 weeks tied up in Capetown! Over Christmas!!! 50 Yards from Panama Jacks...
Marvellous place.

I was in the power plants construction business for over 30 years.
My employer, after a few years at the main engineering office, gave me the choice to stay there, or go out to the building sites ... for life.
I choosed, with SWMBO permission, to go to the building sites.
And we never regretted the decision!
The usual schedule was 3 months on, 1-2 weeks off for the duration of the construction and commissionning, sometimes warranty as well. (one and a half to two years usually)
Then anything between 1 week and 1 year (usually 4-6 months) vacation till the next start.
Was out with familly whenever possible (french school available, political situation acceptable).
Worked in Algeria, Burundy, India, Iraq, Iran, Lybia, Malaysia, USA, France, Germany, Italy, Senegal,
Now, retired in Spain, still traveling, mainly to explore new diving grounds : Singapore, Thailand, Brazil, Philippines, NZ, or sailing : Atlantic crossing, Greece, Creta as a crew, or single handed racing mostly around the Balearics or to the east coast of Spain.
As a swiss citizen, no tax problem : the law is quite simple : you're in (Switzerland) you pay, your are out you don't.

What an excellent solution. Does that apply to Swiss residents during vacations outside Switzerland?
However any such system would never be acceptable to our taxman.... Too easy to use and far too fair. They couldn't possibly allow anything that black and white!
