Dont go to Sea & EXPECT to be Rescued[/b]

[/ QUOTE ]

Couldn't agree more. Staying out of trouble with a sound vessel, good seamanship and erring on the side of caution seems a much better idea to me.

I wonder if vhf wasn't standard equipment would the RNLI get so many calls for breakdowns and non life threatening emergencies?

A bit like the lifejacket vs safety harness debate I reckon.

Even with a VHF I don't EXPECT to get rescued ... I hope that if I get into difficulties beyond my capability that I MAY get rescued ... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I suppose I will go on line and renew after the end of June, did feel it an essential bit of kit, and while I reckoned they lost money collecting our fees, I am glad they saw sense and did not put on a punitive charge for carrying and using safety equipment properly.

At the end of the day the most important thing is to have the kit, to know how it should be used properly, and to be grateful there is such a service out there.

My god, I really must stop this tone and have a good old rant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a no brainer!

Friend of mine at Ofcom says
"all those people that have paid £20 to re-newed their licence that takes them beyond Oct 1st 06 are registered on our system and can re-new on-line FOC. All those that don't re-new will be charged £20 to re-register and they may lose their call sign and MMSI number".

Dahhhhhhhhh - no brainer.

He also added that Ofcom had been watching various internet sites/ BB's and couldn't understand the fuss when most people pay £60 for a single tin of AF to paint their boats bottom every year but would consider not paying £20 for a life times licence??
Beats me!!!

Re: This is a no brainer!

what amazes me is that Ofcom say they are going to give lifetime licences to everyone that wants one (effectively free to anyone who already has paid for one) and we get month after month of threads complaining they are ripping us off! Jeez! what a culture we live in

Re: This is a no brainer!

I shall see just how magnanimous they are, having re-checked when my license is due. It will be more than a little annoying if I do have to pay £20 for a license from 25th September to 30th September and then another £20 on the 1st October for the new setup. But "rules is rules", and I don't want to lose the callsign that has been with the boat since 1963.

Re: This is a no brainer! Dave .... not so !

If you pay for renewal that is due before cut-off date ........ you don't pay again EVER.
If you don't pay for renewal - you run risk of :

a) Fine for unlicenced gear ---- small risk I agree !
b) Losing Call-sign and MMSI number

Then you have to pay £20 to get a licence after cut-off date anyway ... and probably new Call-sign, MMSI etc. etc.

So whether it's one day or longer before that date - it's still a good deal !!

Boatman post hits it square ... it is free if you have current licence when change occurs ... £20- if not ...

The answer is quite simple - we need antifoul. We dont need Ofcom.

What happens in october?
will the calls be scraped or will thouse haveing them just go on useing them without a licence,As many amatures do ?

Or will the UK service be closed down?

If its free from october then when your outside UK waters how will you justify your "legal"VHF to avoid the £40,000 fine?

In the Baltic the meteos still given in Russian and Engilsh as well as incomprhensable toungs (unless you actualy speek Finish)

trouville .....

Licence will still be issued - but in UK it will be for LIFE ..... not as a yearly pay fee licence.

So International will not be a problem - as I will still be able to show a licence - along with other UK boats etc.

Re: trouville .....

Will they send me one? After all if its for life a large number will sail overseas leaving the UK for good (tony blairs govt said excile is after 3 months)

Where should i apply? Perhaps i should pay £120 a year for an accomadation address then drive a British car as well, that way i could have a free VHF call and not have to pay speeding or parking fines!!

Thats a good idea but in Europe when a car is controled if fines are found attachet to the car reg you have to pay or walk, how long will it be before europe has laws protecting refugees as the UK has

I suppose very one in the UK knows that a lot of register their cars thus and never pay fines even pass the radar giving a two finger salute? Not British

In the Baltic no one uses their VHF i left mine on for days and even scaning heard NOTHING at all except the meteo!!Very lonly part of the world but then the solar panel dosent charge as well as it dose in the med.

I still have about 7/8 weeks before ill be there i hope it walms up by then??? Priced out of the med seems unfair, but can only hope for some global warming and Polish woman, they must be the last truly good an intelegent wonan in Europe not to mention stuning!

Re: trouville ..... aw come-on !!!

Trouville ...... how could anyone refuse you ????

Polish women ???? So you haven't been to Latvia yet then !!!

I am.... anyway if you still have to pay the £20 at some stage then it is far better to do it when the existing licence expires and continue with legal use and keep existing call signs/MMSI nos.

One question, well two really... will we still have to display the licence in the window?? will ofcom still send us annual licences or will the new licence just state that it 'forever'??

There must still be some licence to display or how else will they know who is licenced and who isn't - when they do their checks that is /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

No! But i do have a Baltic pilot including Latvia,as it was expensive i supose i better use it! As Latvias not far from Poland i suppose the woman could be alike?

Polish woman though are educated charming and speak English! And seem to want to do well.Their also independant?? I think??

I want to find out if they can cook and if so what? As Polish food is excellent? but not eaten anywhere ive been to!which wasent very far, this season i will look further!

Its a pity the season between snow and ice is so short just time to get there and get back for winter

As far as I'm aware the following should apply;

The new Free service is only available to people that can download the paperwork on-line. You will still have to go into the Ofcom site once a year and confirm your details before you can download the "new" licence.

If you sell the boat the licence is non-transferable - so you get to pay £20 to re-register the new licence/boat, but once it's done you don't have to pay again as long as the ships/your details remain the same.

For those people that do not have internet connection and wish to carry on re-newing by post then nothing will change i.e. £20/year.

Peter.
