Who has Hull on their places to go list

I went there once in 1972 for a Uni interview when the bridge was being built; never felt the urge to go back to see it completed. I did pass through though Hull often though, as a passenger on the Hull to Rotterdam/ Zeebrigge. ferries. Do the good citizens of Grimsby still hate the citizens of Hull as they were all once part of Humberside ?

I joined a boat club on the south side of the river, very friendly club made me very welcome including a retired Grimsby trawler man.
Then an old guy from Hull joined , once accepted as a member he arrived and moored his boat on the club moorings, it appeared to be a commercial fishing boat including lobster / crab pots and baskets, within 2 weeks he had attacked the retired gentleman in the club bar with fists , he was asked to leave. As far as I can tell Hull tolerates a totally different culture to elsewhere in the UK, not helped by Prescott making it fashionable to communicate with your fists .

I was a regular visitor from 1962 to 1968. It was the pits. A grimy Hell smelling of rotting fish and populated by very angry tribal people. Went back in 1990 and couldn't believe the transformation, flashy marina, glossy shopping centres etc etc. Visited again in 2011 and realised that all the razamatz was just a veneer and that the old Hull is still there just below the surface. Centre of culture? Maybe.

So in 62 and 68 and beyond Hull was a fishing town so what does a clever person like your self expect to smell like ?

I've just checked on google earth (assuming its current)......

Unfortunately not all the bars have the Barrier erected around them.
Ironically one of the pubs/restaurants where the missiles came from in called The GREEN BRICKS ;)

Our mooring is opposite the Green Bricks and we've never had or seen any trouble or missles being thrown. The marina area was well known for rowdy behavior but most of the anti-social pubs were closed down or demolished.

Hull has been awarded the esteemed City of culture award , is anyone planning to cruise there ?

We used to visit Hull marina several times a year , very lively place never a policeman too far away so you can always ask for directions or help (they are usually found in pairs with a dog) .

The Bars and clubs around the marina were always packed with atmosphere , I remember one Bank holiday around 11:00 am while waiting for the lock gates to open we were given a special ' Hull cultural farewell ' by way of a volley of beer/WKD bottles hurled our way . :)

There are plenty of cultural take-aways too , I walked about 1/2 mile from the marina and found every type of take-away you can imagine, even offered 'business' to take away no less than three times by several young ladies.

Anyway if you are going don't miss Dagger Lane and the sealife centre , its a must :)

IMHO the best bit of all is exhilarating feeling as you cruise under the Humber bridge on the way out, if you make it :)

Hull was the first port of call when I took delivery of Stilldunno in 2005. Nice cruise up the Trent then opened her up for the first time and got 39 kts.
Of course going "under" the Humber Bridge from Hull you are in fact going further inland :D

Left the boat there for the first week as I needed the tide to go up the Great Ouse (the proper one at Kings Lynn)
When I got back the following week with crew we walked until we found the takeaways.
Never offered "business" on that lovely walk but loads of FREEBIES :disgust:

I never did find out what was on the hull when I got to Ely. Looked a bit like lard!

There were several pairs of girls that shouted "are you looking for Business boys", which obviously grabbed my attention (note name on the stern of my boat) , it took several accostings for me to understand the communication faux pas :o

Ok we are in hull on 14th december we have a few hours spare anyone in the marina to make us a brew have a chat .roy

Not looking promising seastoke, there used to be a forum member in hull but not seen a post from him for a while.
If all else fails you could ask around the marina to see if my old boat is there..........

'Business' ;)

what sort is she ,can you get on the marina

Oops , I think you missed my sense of humour .......

My boat was called Business (few years ago now) ,.
you really dont want to walk around Hull marina telling everyone you are looking for business :o

Its immediately adjacent to the red light zone and the girls ask you as you walk passed " Are you looking for Business"

That is my boat pictured above, it really was called Business and I was a bit slow on the uptake,
I thought all the girls round the marina were really friendly,
I did get asked back to several parties to the apartments that overlook the marina by what seemed like normal hen parties .

You can walk around the edge of the Marina which isnt a good thing when you are staying in the marina.
