Hi All

Who has had copper coat done for more than a season and what are the results like compared to your old anti foul paint

Are you glad you had it done and has it achieved what you were told it would do by the dealer who applied it

if you changed your boat would you do it again or would you go back to the traditional paints

do you think it was worth the money ?????

I have had it for 6 years and I am happy with it. The big advantage for me is that I can dive and replace anodes and twice a season I give it a scrub to get rid of any scum, As I dont need to re-antifoul I dont necessarily need to lift out so I am saving on that hassle and cost. I would do it again

We had ours done professionally and it worked very well but eighteen months later it was apparently falling off. We had sold the boat after just over a year and the purchaser's surveyor failed to spot it but we subsequently heard that they (the purchaser) was trying to get the yard that had applied it to replace it under warranty.

I guess the lesson is that it is expensive and you need it to last a long time. The standards of work that are acceptable for antifouling that is going to last a year are not necessarily sufficient for Coppercoat that you expect to last ten years. We haven't had it applied to our new boat - the idea is still attractive, but I'm not confident of finding someone that will do it well enough for it to last the five years or more that are necessary for it to make economic sense.

Hi All

A, Yes, good, just a slime layer easily power washed off.

Are you glad you had it done and has it achieved what you were told it would do by the dealer who applied it

A, No, because the expense is greater than any return, if you sell the boat soon after having it done, it's a long term thing IMHO

Q, do you think it was worth the money ?????

A, It is if you DIY, but at full retail by an application company the price will probably make your eyes water.

Shawn, have you spoken to Mark ( Elessar) of this forum? His business applies Coppercoat. I have heard lots of good reports, but it is a long term investment, so you really need to be looking at keeping the boat for 3+ years to make a return.
Have you found a "candidate" yet?

I reckon it goes beyond the hard cash payback analysis though Paul, there's other benefits to consider such as not having to do the dreaded antifoul each year even if that benefit is limited to more time in the water rather than on the hard if you don't do the antifouling yourself. then there's increased resale value and arguably, easier to sell. The more I think about it, the more attractive copper coating becomes

Spill the beans Shawn, what have you got your eye on? :)

I sort of agree Gary, but also think it is not bad process to leave the boat out of the water for a month or so a year. Mine has to come out for the anodes, clean the sterngear etc, and the a/f is a couple of days. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of Coppercoat, and the principle certainly saw the Spanish Armada off. :)

well I haven't done it so far but I will be having it done over the winter.
other boats in the marina are very happy, the local fouling is very aggressive and Hurricane has had good results on the hull with Jenny Wren
last years anti foul worked really well. the stuff we used this year was useless
the extra lifts and wash off's soon eat up the difference plus the extra fuel increase because of the extra drag

I will have nothing else. The first one i did was DIY on evenstar 3 (an S37) which is now owned by jergen. I left corporate life and set up ARC and we have done hundreds of coppecoats since, including many brand new boats.
As you are going to shafts the savings are even greater, as you only ever need lift and hold, to jetwash, change your anodes and clean your props.
On tests on an MBY sunseeker, it gained 2 knots compared with clean, bare epoxy.
Solitaire gained a stupid amount of speed when we did his rIB.
It's great. Just get it done or carefully RtFM.

It's just water-based epoxy plus copper powder, so mix up your own for a third of the cost...

Well done. Have you got a link to where I can make my own engine oil too, that should save me some more money.

The fact is that Coppercoat have been making it for 21 years and many copies have been attempted, some by large companies, and have all failed. That should quickly show that there is slightly more to it than "putting some powder in some epoxy".
When we come across these cost saving remedies on boats and are asked to remove them, they cannot be blasted off. They have to be sanded off at great, time consuming expense.
In my opinion only a fool would put an unproven, difficult to remove concoction on their pride and joy.
