In the water .... most of the year!!
Visit site
It's that time of the year when I start to look at where I can go in the summer months (May actually) and as I haven't been to South Wales for some 20 years I was considering going to Newquay, river Tiefi (Cardigan) and Fishguard.

Not a very demanding trip but I thought it would be a pleasant (easy) weeks cruise.

Has anybody any experience of these ports/stop-over places and are there any welcoming Yacht clubs at these places.

Any info welcome.

Tom

PS. Do any of the Menia Canal bashers fancy tagging along.

Passed them all quite a few times, but never found a good reason to visit. Theres a bit of a marina in Aberistwith??? I think. Have to look it up in me book of words. There seems to be very mixed opinions about Fishguard which I think, is the only harbour that is not tidal.

One has been there
Now, You are talking about a rather Magical place imho.

There was/is?
A project to improve the Estuary bit.
Dunno how that's going on
Maybe someone else will know.

The river itself is about 70 miles long iirc.

First fished it in 1959!

There was a 'reel' good (get the Pun, I am so witty sometimes it suprises Me!) book I read about a Poacher come Bailiff who knew how to catch the best Brownies and Seat trout there
Dai somebody or other.
Well it would be I suppose!

Tiss a lovely spot

Anchoring only I imagine.

Nosed in there a few years back

Tiss a Magic spot as said.
Yerv got me thinking now Little Ship.

Oops
Got to go
Summats boilin over!

Phew!
Nearly burnt the Gravy

Anyway
Just found some notes in me old log book thinghie

'River changes Continously
Spit at Penn y Ergydd give a wide berh
Strong currents ebb and flow
5ft
2.5ft
might have to dry out
access at east side of Poppit sands
2.5ft l water
bar swell sou westerly
'push' toward rocks cliff hotel
White marker posts
along cliff face
ldg to est (dunno what that meant can't remember!)
proceed south to 'perch mast' (lit)
pass to starboard
in narrows pcd to patch pontoon 6ft
visitors moorings
01239 613966.

Sounds worse than it is.
Beautifull spot
Usual stuff about there though
Prevailing westerlies and a big range.

Unspoilt beauty but takes a little thought.
Worth it though!

I've been into both. Fishguard access is so easy there is no navigation to speak of. Just don't head off to the ferry terminal, and go to Lower Town instead. I've posted pics previously on this thread

Teifi is navigable, though very tidal. There is a boat club just inside the entrance with is drying only really.

The estuary shifts continually, and the buoyage is not always up to date. If any boat with a draft anywhere near 5' goes in, best to call this lot before hand

You can get up to Cardigan relatively easily. Not a lot of boats visit, so usually pretty quiet. Best bet is to phone the guys in the above link and ask for advice about boat size and draft. I've only been up in small boats.

In this gallery I've put a bunch of photos of the entrance showing the Cliff Hotel, the navigation marks, the general view, and the entrance to the boat club, all at low(ish) tide.

Big PS - my pics of both locations were taken at low tides to show navigation. Not to show them off as the picturesque locations they are

Just to show the difference(the following are not my pics), this is Fishguard lower town at high tide

Sorry to highjack the thread. There is a tidal river running into South Wales just under the M4 junction for Swansea. There seems to be a boat yard or marina almost under the junction. That looked an interesting river to visit. Any info' out there?

If you are talking about where I think you are talking about, that is the River Neath, and the Monkston Cruising and Sailing club

Never been there, though I do know the area well. Our Bristol Channel forum should be able to provide more info I would have thought.

new quay well worth visiting.yacht club has lovely new showers.safe anchorage in the bay.harbour dries out but sandy.aberaeron nice as well but have to enter via river at h/w and a bit stony.
