I have beought my 30yr old autopilot unit back off the boat. Controller seems to work but there is no reaction from the drive unit when told to change course. I iniw i cannsend it back to raymarine at fareham and they will have a look, but wait time is 3 weeks before they even start.
There must be some kind of electrical/electronics engineers in essex that could take a look,
Any ideas?
Its 30 yr old technology, so cant be complex, and quite likely its just a simple fix, wiring/connection or motor burnt out.
Thx

Bru of this forum might be the man you need.

If it's a Raymarine, Ollie of Seapower Marine Electronics at SYH has just finished rebuilding our 30 year old type 2 (long) linear drive unit, The problem with ours was that the original plastic gears had shed most of their teeth - the motor seems to work fine, but I believe that was replaced just before we bought her in 2010. He also traced occasional tripping of the autopilot to a worn track on the potentiometer of the rudder position sensor, so that was replaced. If it is a motor problem, a rewind specialist might be your best bet.

The Raymarine below decks electrical linear actuators incorporate a clutch, an epicyclic gearbox and a recirculating ball unit to convert the rotary motion to linear. In ones as old as ours, the gears were plastic, but later models have metal gears and Raymarine will supply a pack of metal gears to replace the plastic ones.

I believe Ollie is a Raymarine dealer.

Peter.

just tried to fix one on my mates boat, the drive motor (pumps hydraulic fluid) to the ram was seized up solid due to lack of use, we replaced it with one that works, but the "auto" pilot still does not work due to the compass being knackered, apparently they too just fade away and die if not used. We are however able to point and hold heading, simply by steering to a selected course and then switching on, and can also lose or gain degrees using the + or _ buttons. If we switch to "auto" the boat turns itself into an unguided missile.

+1 for Bru.
He fixed our alternator problem at very short notice back in the spring, and quite literally only charges for the the time spent working, not time spent having cuppa.
No connection, just a happy customer.

Thanks all, moody sabre, that spot wouldn't look at 12v systems. Matt, thanks for the offer but I popped into dauntless, and Charlie had a quick look at at it, there was a wire come adrift from the motor that needs resoldering on, hopefully that will be all there is to it.
