I think they're talking about how much it would cost to run a boat where 'you're not going to do the sailing'... ie. fully crewed, year round. The article is about someone on a million a year and by the time you've got passed the house, school fees, tutor, nanny, gardner, summer gite, winter ski chalet, investments, cars, etc... there wouldn't be enough left to have a fully crewed boat on that income... I'd still like to try:rolleyes:

Perhaps the BBC is right, and most of us on this forum are just deluded that we own and sail yachts.

In fact just because we are here talking about maintenance, savings and DIY, we do not own and sail yachts, but rather floating caravans.

Those who own and sail yachts do not have to be concerned with cleaning and maintenance, and saving on electronics, and rigging, and berthing ...

""But there are some things a million pounds won't bring you. "A million is a huge whack but it's not enough to have your own yacht, that you're not going to do the sailing. That'll cost hundreds of thousands," says Van Der Post.""

Logical. As the English doesn't even make sense, she must be a foreigner. In France and other continental countries a yacht is a gin palace, not a sailing boat (voilier). Ergo....

Too true, you should have seen the state that my boat was left in by the previous owner!
