The Polaris compass on the binnacle steering position on my yacht has a very large bubble at the top. Either it is leaking slightly or some evaporation has occured. Can I top it up with alcohol myself, or will I have to have it done professionally. I haven't taken the compass off the binnacle yet as I thought i would seek advice first.

I have the same compass and the same problem. I found the linked thread very useful when trying to work out what it is filled with - the main problem is that the filler hole is so small it's very difficult to get a sample to test. I've therefore decided that it's a job for next winter.

I contacted BPSC, who responded as follows "They cannot be repaired! the best we offer is to remove the bubble only."

Good luck

Paul
