Whitlock pedestal throttle pod

"All done except for the throttle control lever which seems to be holding the mechanism to the pod side now. I *thought* that would be easy: take the grub screw out and slide the handle off. But no. It won't budge."

On mine, an older model than yours, the handle is on a splined shaft and needed quite a bit of gentle persuasion before it came off. Not so much a matter of force, more of persistence - and, of course, much swearing and cursing in accompaniment.

The pdf pvb posted was of a slightly different model to mine with 2 grub screws: mine has just one but I thought it would be the same deal. Anyone taken one of these handles off? I'm wondering whether I'm just applying insufficient force to lever it off...
Had a similar control on the previous boat and couldn't get the handle off the splines after removing the grub screw. Somebody showed me a trick of tapping the handle boss from two sides simultaneously with two hammers to loosen it. - worked for me.
Put a bit of grease on the splines when you put it back together.

If its anything like mine the handle is on a tapered spline and after many years, the grub screw (like yours) doesn't seem to be doing very much - Im afraid you will either need a hub puller or a wedge shaped drift behind the lever and against the housing to knock the lever from the tapered spline - good luck

What was incorrect about the Volvo parts I suggested?

Assuming it was the item in that list that said "control mechanism", it doesn't look like my mechanism and that no. 7 part doesn't have the funny s-shaped bit you see broken in the original pic, but thanks anyway for the pointer.

Thanks to everyone for advice on "persuasion". I chatted to someone on the lewmar stand who suggested, as Delfini did, the puller approach although not having such a tool I may give the hammers a go (though gently...)

If you don't succeed, take the control cables off, bring the whole unit (assuming it comes off, wasn't following this too closely) to West Marine and tell them you need to get that lever off and if they maybe have a gear puller. Done that with my saildrive leg when the shaft housing wouldn't come open and with the right tools they had it apart in a few minutes and charged me nothing (a pack of beer appeared in their office the next day).

To conclude this...thanks again to all. "persuasion" was indeed the order of the day. Application of heat via heat gun was precluded by the red plastic neutral button. Instead there was much apprehensive tapping, followed by unsuccessful attempts at levering off with a screwdriver building up to reluctant whacks and use of a bigger screwdriver and eventually the handle popped off. No Apparent bonding of dissimilar metals or corrosion: it had just been jammed on hard. Much grease applied when reassuming....

I came across this thread when struggling to get the casing of my Whitmar housing open.

Eventually the throttle handle came off with some judicious levering with a couple of flathead screwdrivers and a squirt of WD40.

Here's a picture of the mechanism with the lever removed.20220102_121427.jpg20220102_121427.jpg

For anyone finding this thread in the future...

Yes, undo those two screws. Then you notice the two screws under the pedestal top also holding the pod sides together which there's no way you can get even a ratchet or a bit in between the screw and the central pedestal . After some head-scratching you take the bolts out which secure the pod to the pedestal top and miraculously discover that the steel post doesn't go through the middle of the pod so you can angle it out sideways, take the impossible screws out and separate the halves. And here's what I think is the cause of my woes:

That little bracket is sheared, meaning that pulling back the throttle I'm pushing the cable sheath down rather than pushing the cable through the sheath.

Anyone know what that little bracket is called? Teleflex spares sites I've been on don't have many pictures. The rest of the assembly seems almost new so wouldn't want to replace it.
Hi, please can someone provide some more pictures of the Lewmar pod and mechanism so I can see how it fits to the pedestal etc.

Thanks

Pete
