I want to add a 58" (1.47m) high S/S pedestal guard grab rail to an existing Whitlock pedestal. Edson Marine (USA) list an 8" S/S top plate and 1-1/8" rail.

Does anyone have experience of this adaption along with compass refitting plate or other supplier?

Hi!

If you could upload a photo, or have any reference numbers off of the pedestal, I'm sure we can dig out the required numbers, which would be pre-machined appropriately.

FYI, in case you didn't know, Whitlock was integrated into Lewmar a few years ago.

Whitlock pedestal

Hi Ben,

Many thanks for quick response.

We have a Cobra 6-RD deluxe with 4 fixing holes for s/s recessed hex c/sunk screws on the compass fixing plate. its all finished in white. We note from a feint maintenance manual there is/was a non-standard adaptor plate for a grab rail assembly. The boat is a 36' XBOAT built 1999. approx 770mm ht to u/s of compass plate.

((Yes we know of Whitlock/Lewmar and that is where the informative information trail ends!! They don't want to know. "Its no longer made" they say.))

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Try Cliff Mogridge at winchservicing.com he acts as an agent for lewmar and carries some spares he also has drawings of a lot of Whitlocks pedestals as he used to work for them. If you have to get anything made by Lewmar don't hold your breath.

so what are the alternatives. as it happens I also want a guardrail ( canted) to fit a mid 90s Whitlock, and the Lewmar price is simply silly - maybe 4 times their price for the current equivalent. I cann make up a drawing but where can I get it made?

If you can make up the drawing most if not all of the stainless fabricators should be able to do it find one inland and don't mention boat would be the cheapest option.

I did this a couple of years ago. Strongly suggest you take measurements and photos and email them to Cliff at Winchservicing.com. I am sure he will be able to provide you with what you need, and it is not too difficult a job.

I got one made by a local stainless steel fabricator - was very straightforward. I wanted to make a larger one than the original with a protected housing for a navman 6709 chart plotter - so designed it myself and got it made.

Whitlock pedestal grab rail

Thanks all for input.

We will now try to loosen and remove the 4 s/s screws. If that goes well, we will buy the grab rail, create a ring drawing and pass both to a fabricator to manufacture the ring.

Happy sailing - keep warm - Summer is almost down under.

Whitlock pedestal grab rail conversion

In the end it was a simple solution but a difficult undertaking

We purchased an Edson 8" SS top plate and 1-1/8" grab rail.

The diameter of the plate was within and 1/8", all we needed to do was to drill out 4 new fixing holes to suit the existing pedestal.

The hard bit was removing the existing SS screws holding down the compass binnacle plate but in the end we were successful

It all now looks great.
