Thank you all. Engine runs well . It was only air, but I flattenned two good batteries and we even had a car on the dock wall with jump leads. What a performance. Theres no smoke now and the engine runs smoothly.
I havnt taken the boat out yet, next weekend hopefully. If I find further problems I shall return to probe your collective experience again

THANK YOU

Hip, Hip!.....

Glad to hear it. (Not the bit about the flat batteries!) I missed your 2nd and 3rd threads but in answer to one of your questions, Thornycroft as was (Leyland) doesn't exist but the brand has been taken over by AMC of Preston who did the factory re-builds anyway. All parts, and I mean all, right up to an exchange engine, are available, and delivered within a couple of days in my experience - limited, as in 10 years and about 2000 hours of use mine has needed very little. (Thinking about it: two exhaust swan necks - they last 4-5 years and are, unusually, a wee bit pricey at £50 - 100 depending on whether you need all the bits; a fuel lift pump - at £35 new, delivered, hardly worth overhauling the old one; ONE Jabsco impeller; a Bowman oil cooler - £40 - I stood on the water inlet connection on the old one and cracked the soldered joint; alternator £35; two engine flex-mounts; plus belts, oil, filters.)

ASAP are also useful. As are

For advice on the engine and for the boat, try the infoexchange or tech library at

Also, the £70 you paid for a set of new nozzles is, as for most Thornycroft bits, on the (very) cheap side. Rejoice: it's not a Volvo!
