White smoke from Yanmar - problem?

Hi All,

I was in charge of a roughly 5 year old Jeannaeu Sun Odyssey 36 last week. If memory serves, she had a Yanmar engine. (It might have been Volvo - apologies.)

While motoring, with the main just filling on a starboard tack, there was a trace of white 'smoke' in the exhaust.

Is this cause for concern?

I decided to press on, and detected no obvious distress from the motor. Only noticed 'cos one of the crew was a REME officer, and happened to make the comment.

Any thoughts welcome.

You might want to check the impeller for wear.

No worries Jeff, Black smoke means no new pope yet, White smoke announces the election of a new pope.

The smoke may very well be steam. On some engines this indicates that a component of the cooling system is clogged with salt. The most common one is the exhaust manifold, which may need inspection/cleaning.

I had white smoke that turned out to be steam coming out of the exhaust last week. Weed had clogged the raw water inlet and the engine had overheated. Check the cooling system to make sure it's running properly.
