Ok so it’s not an outboard but I know I’ll get a sensible answer here. A little Honda 4 stroke air cooled on a motor wide wheelbarrow.

Runs fine with the following symptoms:

- white smoke
- Floods automatically if I leave the fuel tap open when off.
- less white smoke when going at full chat

Could that simply me a dodgy float needle? Would that have all those symptoms? Fuel not regulated and basically burning too much?

Unit in question is a Honda HP250 with tracks.

If it floods the float needle is not shutting off the fuel.

Check the float height setting. Try cleaning the needle and seat / replace needle, . AFAICS the seat is not a replaceable part

The oil petrol mix may be getting past the rings causing the white smoke.
Slipstream 34 has nailed it

But petrol is getting into the oil because the carb is flooding due to the needle valve not seating properly and the fuel tap being left open when the machine is not in use .
Shutting off the fuel will solve the problem even if cleaning / replacing the needle valve does not.

Yes. Piston rings. If the fuel is draining into the sump it will mix with the oil and raise the level. If the pistons are splash lubricated then the less viscous oil/petrol mix will get past the rings and be burnt. As i said check the oil. You will probably find the level has raised, it is less viscous and smells of petrol. Had the same problem with a sit on mower.

Thanks. The oil looks fairly normal but I’ll need to take a closer inspection. If that’s the case will the piston rings be damaged or will a new float need / carb solve the issue?

come on guys, only one fault here and its causing the rest of the symptoms. Its been mentioned several times already so i won't repeat it.
