White flare alternative?

With all the high intensity electrical lamps available today, would it be possible to match the intensity of a white flare with one? Collision regs preach against shining spotlights on bridges and the like, but is an all round emitter any different to a flare?

I don't suppose legislation would accept such as an alternative.

Some of the charter fishing boats around here hang a high intensity gas lantern up when anchored at night. You spot them very easilly at great distance.

I think a lot of the electric lamps get their intensity from the fact the light is focussed into a beam by the mirror. They probably lose a lot of brightness if the mirror is removed. I'm assuming that an 'electric flare' would be omnidirectional, just like normal fares.

I'd still carry normal flares even if an 'electric flare' existed.

There is also a question of colour. The light from some electric lamps can contain a lot of yellow. I've never set off a white flare, but I'm guessing they are very white. What would be better at penetrating thick fog for example?

White flares are a hangover from the days of paraffin nav lights and cork lifejackets. A really bright torch/spotlight shone on sails, or 'in extremis' shone directly at a ship is bright enough, reusable, and won't explode, unlike at least one Pains-Wessex flare

All the ships that I have worked onboard have had aldis lamps. Now this technology is very old and was originally designed for signalling at sea but is now very useful to give "five or more rapid blasts" of the lamp aimed roughly at a ship (and lets face it it's not like an oncoming car, the distance involved is a few miles and the other guy is probably not even watching you directly).

They don't seem to be readily available anymore and so I would consider carrying one of those 5 gazillion candlepower torches . Just sweep it rapidly past the direction of the ship if rapid "signalling" is not possible.

There was an article in an yottie mag a while ago about some chap who was developing a "percussive flare" that would emit 5 load bangs as well as showing a white light. Haven't heard anything more about it and sadly SWMBO has "tidied up that annoying pile of old magazines" /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
