Anybody got any idea where I can buy a couple of white boards suitable for use for pilotage in a yacht cockpit?

I had a look in Staples but they only had expensive rigid ones.

Off cuts from your local kitchen supplier or DIY shop?
If you get hold of some drawing board clips (Smiths) you can clip a small (folded) chart on top too, with a clear plastic cover if charts not splash proof.
I use one as I dont have a chart table so I used it both in the cockpit and down below for Nav. and Pilotage

These people do self adhesive whiteboard on a roll so you can cut them to the size you want to stick to whatever.

I've never used them but found the info recently when i had a similar (non-boaty) requirement. Also very handy to attach a sheet to a trailer board if you are often using different cars for towing (though not strictly legal I would imagine)

overhead projector pens will write on almost any glossy surface, e.g. a laminated card and wash off easily.

Take care in selecting white boards and pens. Not all pens are suitable for all white boards, some inks are water based others spirit based, mix the two and you get a real mess, the waterbased inks take a few seconds to dry and are easily smudged before they do. I dont think any of the dry wipe pens are water proof although there are pemanent pens for OHP slides.

This sounds like a good idea that may fail on the practicalities.

Chinagraph pens and an offcut of white perspex might be the best bet.

i use A4 paper laminated draw or write on with chinagraph pens works well for us and takes up little room
best of luck

One more thing - I put a perspex sheet over my Yeoman plotter and found that the felt pens used for writing on CD's are excellent with this. Totally permanent until you wipe them with a spot of surgical spirit and it comes straight off.

Should take the odd wave or two.

I've fixed a piece of matt white formica to one of my washboards. I can use pen or pencil, it can face inboard or outboard, and it stays where it's put.

A long time ago I managed to get hold of an A4 sized piece of photo-luminescent material (as used for some safety and fire notices). It worked well with either chinagraph or OHP pens, and had the major advantage that it could be used in the dark. I wish I could get some more!
