My 3 year old Suzuki 2.2 2-stroke has started emitting a whine when in the higher rev. range. Is there a bearing somewhere in the leg that's running dry? I've recently changed the gear oil at the bottom of the leg using the recommended 90W oil.

sure you have filled the gearbox to the correct level?

sure you are using the correct fuel oil mix?

If this whine occurs in a marina area it may be a 'wifi' induced fault.

There is a fairly constant whine issuing from the YBW Lounge which you may be picking up accidentally. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I was going to suggest he introduced it to the lounge, but yours is better.

Further details required - is it a red, white or a rosy. Would also help to know if it is sweet or dry. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Sorry reeac, perfectly reasonable question and you found the clowns, /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif a touch of the sun I think. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif My outboard is a 3.2 and not a Suzuki so I can't help about the bearing. VicS could be near the mark about oil level though, I filled mine in a hurry and somehow got a 'bubble' or airlock and subsequently a false oil level and it was only the change in noise that caused me to check.

Thanks, chaps. I'll check the gear oil level [again]. What I don't know, not having dismantled the engine to that extent, is whether the drive shaft is locatd by the engine crankshaft bearing at the top end or whether there is a separate bearing to do this job. Regarding the YBW lounge, that would be a drone not a whine.

No top bearing - the top of the drive shaft locates in the bottom of the crank shaft (splines). The whine will be from the lower gear housing - nothing up top to whine.

Unless it's the main bearings, but they grumble rather than whine. And it's usually the top one under the flywheel. So forget I said that.

Naw, the Whine from the lounge is limited to 6 or 7 pretentious ol' gimmers and a coupla over the hill tarts...
sad sad beggars they are.. but.. you have to admit.. they are so far right as to be held up as examples of money orientated tedium.. too much of a clique.. needs weeding.. or culling..

Oi! Capn S there's nothing wrong with over the hill tarts, 'cos Rosa in the Sweda bar in Las Palmas was a very nice lady....so there.. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

When filling the bottom gearbox on these little engines. it is a good procedure to use one of the refill tubes with a spout. Cut the spout so it will just go into the lower of the two holes (yes the lower one) i.e the hole that is normally used to drain the oil.

have the motor in the upright position. Then squeeze the tube until the oil appears at the top hole (oil level) You then lay the engine over on its side, remove tube and fit bottom hole bolt. bring the engine back upright, and see if you need a small touch up to fill.

This procedure is much faster than trying to fill from the bottom hole, and avoids the dreaded air bubble.

Another good lesson learned, dreaded air bubble nearly caught me out, but won't in future. Thanks.

[/ QUOTE ] You mean from the top hole!

Filling from the bottom is the normal way to do it. Thats what my owners manual tells me to do, and I assumed they all said the same thing!

At the risk of prolonging things [what a successful thread this has been!] I thought I knew better than the manufacturer when I changed the oil recently and patiently dribbled oil into the top hole. Yesterday I tried pumping oil into the bottom hole using a traditional flexi-spout oil can with a wrap of tape to seal things. I found that it required lots of extra oil to get it to the correct level - it was probably only half full so the dreaded air bubble had probably misled me. I have yet to try the motor out to see whether the whine has now gone ....lets hope that it's gone from this thread as well.
