Which yachting mag should I buy?

Which yachting magazine should I be subscribing to, the choice is bewildering? I've looked at them all and ruled out the obvious Yachting World (not likely to be quite that adventurous for a while yet!) and the ones for boats without sails. I am a non-boat owning, but enthusiastic beginner who hopes to do a Day Skipper course soon (ish). Will probably spend most of my yachting life in inshore waters. Currently thinking about Yachting Monthly - any advice on which is most appropriate?

Bewildered by too much choice? - God knows what I will be like if I ever get round to being able to afford a boat!

suggest that you buy YM one month followed by PBO the next and see which comes closest to giving you what you want. If your interests are more on the how to rather than where to, then PBO is probably more your magazine.

when we were dreaming about being able to sail and owning a boat we subscribed to YM. Now we have a boat PBO has got more info on how to fix the darn thing!
I think YM is probably more the ticket at the moment - they also do some good articles on the more mundane, but very important stuff like, how to approach a bearth with the wind and how to handle a boat in a marina , that sort of thing.

Anyone brave enought to suggest Sailing Today.... ducks and runs...

You could try them all for a month...Captans Log always seemed an odd title...
I quite like sailing today but probably shouldn't say that on this web site...they had some good UK coastal cruising guides

Buy them all, or at least browse through them all in that public reference library known as WH Sm!th. Be careful not to let them take over your house/ garage/ shed/boat/life.

Forget buying the mags, find a rich bloke with a nice yacht and let him teach you the ropes

It is actually my favourite, but I get lots from all three mags I subscribe to: ST, YM and PBO. Yachting World always looked like it was for boy racers, but after a recent thread about this I might revisit it.

But ST no longer appears to have any editorial ?! And I thought you were a journalist - the one we received recently is full of ads and little else - barring the wonderful Colin Jarman

Depends on your earlier reading/televison viewing. If you liked Blue Peter then you should buy PBO - if you read Swallows and Amazons then YM. And if you're a baby Jeremy Clarkson then YW

I'd agree about the ads, but I like the small boat sailing, the cruising stories, used boats, bla, bla. Also, it was the first ever (sailing) mag I bought, so maybe there's a degree of nostalgia there.

And I'm not a journalist...fie!

Thanks Stingo, I knew I could count on you for the pragmatic approach. If you know where there are any send them my address! Till they come flooding to my door I'll stick with buying mags, begging crewing and swotting up for my DS.

Thanks Robbie but a bit late for this advice - have nearly been thrown out of WHS now several times. They think I'm into industrial espionage or something! Guess I'll have to buy a shed as I can't afford a yacht - seems to have taken over my life for the past 4 months. I am dreading going cold turkey when winter sets in.

IPC or not IPC

The mags are;

PBO - I have small yacht and want to do things with it and make things for it.

YM - I want to charter a yacht in all parts of the world and the Solent.

YW - I have a sofa and want to read about super-yachts and ocean racing.

Sailing Today - I have a small boat and go sailing regularly.

I find YW is best read on the throne, not on the sofa otherwise SWMBO tries to read it at the same time.

If you didn't live in SW Scotland, I'd suggest you drop by Cambridge and pick up the last 18yrs or so of YM (sorry, now gone), YW and PBO, since they're about to go in the skip (see advert "Back Issues").
I subscribed to all 3 for years, but gave up on PBO as too anoraky - typically has a 4-page article in ridiculous detail on someone's DIY bodge on a 20 yr old tub, which must be of direct relevance to max one reader ("How I converted a Westerly Centaur to a Deck Saloon using only one sheet of MDF and an old Morris Minor Windscreen"). Having said that, it does have lots of good articles for beginners, just a bit too anal (the discussion on anchor chain lengths went on for years, with more and more complicated formulae, as if the third decimal place was relevant!).
Basically, PBO is for boats <£20K or <30ft, YM for cruisers 30-40ft, and YW for racers and everything upmarket. ST I have only tried a couple of times - full of product reviews that seem to be copied from elsewhere.
They have all suffered hugely from a ridiculous court case a few years ago when YW was successfully sued for honest if rather pointed criticism of the Walker Wingsail, so all reviews are now totally bland.
