Which would you choose - Starlight 39, Typhoon 37, Moody S38?

The starlight is a quick boat but has a couple of problems which can be difficult to live with.
Depending on the age, the older 39's have a high bridge deck which can hamper older sailors from entering the cabin from the cockpit. I believe the mark 2 has reduced the bridgedeck considerably.

i don't know about the other two choices.

Correct, the Mk 2 has the bridgedeck level with the cockpit seats, a very sensible correction. As a result the walk-through between aft cabin and heads is lower, but that's a small price to pay.
As you mention 'a couple' of problems I'd be interested to know what else you see as a problem.

I may be able to steer the OP to an excellent yacht being offered at a bargain price. Serious ill health has meant our friends need to sell their very wellkitted out and maintained Westerly Typhoon which is currently lying in the wonderful harbourof Mahon in the Med. The boat is going live on e bay and other sites later today.

For what its worth cyca handicaps rate them as below , lower number means they reckon faster:

Starlight 39 standard. 12.75
". ". Shoal draft 13.75
". ". Wing keel. 15.75
Moody S38. 13.00
Westerly typhoon 13.75

They dont quote varients for moody or westerly , but hcaps will be for standard boats .

However from experience racing against them , typhoon and deep keel starlight 39 have similar performance , i have closely beaten and been beaten by both , well sailed by long term experienced owners .

Are you sure about that number for the Starlight 39 wing keel - I thought they were faster than the standard keel. BTW if anyone thinks the high bridgedeck on the Starlight is a problem, have a look at Swans of the 60s and 70s

RYA national handicap for cruisers gives:

Design Base Number
MOODY S38 0.963
STARLIGHT 39 0.957
TYPHOON 0.965

not a lot between them! although it seems to think the Moody is faster than the Starlight which as a biased deep keel/fractional rig owner I'd agree with ;-)

Brainstorm,
Did your friend manage to sell his Typhon, I notice that the last advert I read mention "at the Wirral" has the boat returned there or still in Mahon, that's if it still available. Can't seem to get back on the site where I first saw the advert? Thanks.

I’d buy the one where you can get into your bunk without doing cartwheels

If you can’t get into your bunk without wriggling round in circles I won’t even consider a boat
