Which web based e-mail provider??

another vote for googlemail - as said before gmail now works well and less spam gets through than previous one.

because they know who you know... I use gmail, not entirely comfortable with the profiling, but fully accept it has some significant advantages. I trust the statement that they'll never give the info away to anyone except when a government specifically requests it, because they don't need the money. And I don't think I have done anything naughty enough to warrant HM Gov to come after me that rigourously...

As a so called professional in this industry (when not away sailing ) I am often asked by friends and relatives about free mail. IMO it’s a good idea (I use Yahoo.com) and most of the services use the same software at the front end to provide access. The free services are all trying to get you to ‘upgrade’ to the paid for service and will place advertisements on your screen unless you pay them to not to.

That said there is nothing wrong with them you just need to pick your provider. As a general rule you should consider:

• How ‘stable’ is the provider – are they going to be around for long? You probably don’t wan to change e-mail address too often as this is a real pain!
• Can you download and save your e-mail on a local PC (ie laptop)?
• Do you want to use ‘PC’ based e-mail programs like outlook or similar?
• What is the likelihood of the service to start charging and what happens to your e-mail if they do?
