We have used Yahoo Mail for the last 7 years and we are very happy with the service. It always works and it is fast.
As a strange aside; we also use the Yahoo Small Business service. Here we have had a lot of problems with access and speed. Sometimes the service has just closed down. So we have had to ask ourselves; how come this Yahoo service that we are actually paying hard cash for does not work, but Yahoo Mail that is free works all the time ??!!? Please explain that logic to me. I have not yet got any response.
I have used hotmail for years with no problem. I heard recently that all google mail is read by a machine to target you with advertising. This would not bother me but I know some people who have stopped using it since they have found out.

Allen is correct, they do "read" your mail. Their "Privacy Policy" says it is all automatic and no human intervention but it does give you the feeling that someone is reading your mail. No problem if you use pop3 to upload to your PC e-mail client, only if you use the webmail reader.
All emails are "read" in some way or another by whatever means they are sent/received. But there aren't cavernous halls of clerks at desks looking at each one and laughing at the corny jokes or making notes about your shoe size or taste in underwear.
Googlemail/Gmail is no different in that respect - and as others have said, works very well. You can also use it to access (and send) using your POP3 account.
Yahoo, and especially Hotmail, have a reputation (deserved or not) for being used by spammers and the like.
The Google search engine apparently stores every search made through it. If you don't like that idea you can use Scroogle - http://www.scroogle.org/cgi-bin/scraper.htm
I've given up worrying and use the Google search engine and the webmail, because they're good. Maybe I'll even move to the new Google browser - Chrome. Early reports say it's also good and very fast.
If you are going offshore for any period, you might want to consider MailaSail who offer a compression technology that makes sending and receiving messages via sat phone more cost efficient. They also offer the ability for your boat to be pinged so that family, friends etc can know where you are.
Mail service is always reliable and the guy is very knowledgeable. Full mail feature support and mail can always be accessed via the web.
We have used Fastmail. web based and you can import it using POP3 or IMAP to Outlook etc. No adverts, very fast, it is possible to use it with an Iridium phone. Small charge but worth it.
