Which way does an engine turn

Might be a stupid Q but here goes anyway.

When I look at the front of my engine (Farymann A40) it runs in and Anti-Clock direction.

Having just removed my Hydraulic pump (Gear box in other words) it shows that the pump must run in a clockwise direction.

To me the pump end of the engine looks like it is just the other end of the shaft compared to the flywheel on the front. Is there some sort of gearing that changes the direction of rotation of the two ends or has someone fitted the wrong pump for me.

I will be able to check on the w/e when I go to refit the whole shebang but it would be nice to know in advance.

Anybody got any ideas?

it all depends on the cam shaft,you can have two identical engines turning in ether direction. i sold a 7ltr v8years ago to a guy to build a beach racing car,,,it went flat out ,,,,BACKWARDS!

rich :)) Why pay, when you can do it yourself?

My last boat was a shipman 28 & I've still got a COPY of the engine manual & pump manual at home. If you're still at a loss after the weekend I can send you a copy. I'll be home Tuesday onwards so can't help 'till then.

I have always understood that an engine would run in the direction of the aspiration flow. So the forward motion of the crankshaft at it's higher point would be moving in the direction of the air intake towards the exhaust.

If the pump was working OK and turning the prop it almost certainly is going in the right direction - I fitted the wrong direction pump to a Lister diesel once and it exploded - very messy! - does depend on the type of pump though...
There is no gearing usually between the engine and pump.
If you look at the Drive end of the engine - flywheel end where your pump is fitted - it should turn ACW - looking at the drive shaft of your pump it should turn CW. This is correct. You can check by drawing a circle & rotation on a piece of tracing paper as if you are looking at the drive end of the engine - write on "Drive side" Then reverse the paper and write on "Pump Side" and you will see the rotation is now CW.
Pumps are usually designated as rotation looking on the drive shaft. Good luck at the weekend.

Sorry everyone, I am a dunce. I crank the engine clockwise so problem solved.

It is now 9.45, England have lost and I am going to slash my wrists. Hope everyone has a good day.

Dunno whethr it helps. Mine runs in both directions. Quite a scare. Black smoke coming out of the air-intake. Lucky it did not decide to suck water through the exhaust though. Since you got the problem figured out I thought some entertainment is in order. Do not slash your wrist yet. Another chance four years from now :))))). Is the emergency session in parliament on already??

not nessarily so as sometimes the crank handle is connected to the camshaft rather than the crankshaft, farryman does this if i rightly remember.



usually the hydraulic pump has a direction arrow firmly fixed on it for running direction.

SOMEtimes the pump can be assembled inanother configeration to give the other running direction if needed.

Most pumps dont like being run backwards even for a short while when new, due to a lack of oil.
