Morning Wise Ones,
We are looking for a good quality water filter. As permanent cruisers, we need one that is going to last and do a good job. If you know wot I mean.
Thanks for any advice that you can give on this subject.
Maria

Hey Maria

If you really are just talking about a water filter then this isn't a major issue/decision. These have a limited lifespan depending on your rate of water usage. In cruising mode I replace both the filters in my system every season. In liveaboard mode you might do this every 4-6 months, depending on the configuration of your circuit(s). They shouldn't be hugely expensive units and don't take long to replace either. Having said that I'm sure other people might have better ideas on exactly which types or makes to use. But I just go to the chandler each season and replace whatever I've got with whatever I can buy off the shelf that day. The nozzle connectors are usually a standard size and it's an easy 10 min job to unscrew the jubilee clips and swap the filter units out with the new ones.

Great advice, as always. We're looking at a 'Shurflo' priced around 50 bucks. I guess that filters can't really be made to last and therefore we must get used to merely replacing them once their shelf-life has expired.
I'll let the skipper know. He's dying to put the order through for the GPS.
Ja ne.

I use general ecology type, great to take out ALL nasties, I dont filter all the water, just for drinking and cooking/tea, so it has a seperate tap, the filters last much longer, about a year, as we arent filtering shower/washing up water etc. Which is good, as the filters are quite expensive, in UK anyway!

Hi,

We're the same as Rob. We change our Jabsco filter once a season when we're full time cruising BUT, only have the filter fitted to the galley cold water outlet, rather than to the whole system. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That way, the filter doesn't have to deal with either the shower or hot water, just what we drink or cook with. Saves having to change the filter so often! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Just an idea for you to consider.

Cheers Jerry

In the UK Wickes do a very cheap one ( you must have a similar discount builders merchants in Mexico or Japan) at around £20 why use something more expensive. Ive used one on my boats for about five years now ( replace filters every six months)and they are great. none of the propriety ones would stop serious infection and belhartsia or similar shouldnt be a problem, so you will have to use a treatment as well "Milton"

I have used the "Freshness" variety for some years. However, I then had a new one which started to leak after a month and after numerous emails to the makers I received a replacement (8 months later!) but that too failed in a similar manner. Each time a crack developed in the cast plastic/polythene type material of the output flange. Be warned!

Hi,

I would personally recommend the Wellness Water Filter which I have used for two years & think that it is absolutly amazing It not only filters the water but produces water better than bottled water. The are quite expensive but you do get what you pay for. it is definatly the Rolls Royce of water filters. A friend of mine also has one on his Swan

We have just upgraded our General Ecology with a new filter and tep kit. It was on the boat so we had not used it before.

The man at GE (Harold) was really helpful and the kit dead easy to install.

The biggest difference between this one and all the others is that it will make unsafe water pure as opposed to just making it taste better!!

I have to say that I was not convinced about filters until I tried it. Tea, coffee, squash etc all taste MUCH better than before. Also we dont have to buy and carry all those bottles from Tesco anymore!

GE do a 2000 litre model for £170 or the 4000 litre one for £280.

Quality stuff.

Cheers
