For a few years I had a Casio G-Shock whose strap snapped about a year ago. I bought a new cheaper slimmer but less durable Casio, which had sufficient functions the best being that it received a radio signal every night to keep the time accurate. Today, I caught it putting my arm through a life jacket and broke the strap fitting on the body of the watch! :(

So time to buy another one. All I want is a digital watch with light, 5 minute count down timer for racing. I dont need to know the time in New York, Delhi or anywhere else come to that.

What 's the watch of choice for sailing ? (100 quid absolute tops)

I'm thinking of the beginning of Easy Rider when Peter Fonda chucks his watch on the floor.....

'I'm hip about time, but I've just got to go!'

If You fancy Casio again
A Casio Sports Sailing Watch for £30 or less, although does not have the auto correct function (and like nearly all has a dual time function but can be set to places other than New york or Delhi)

Being a PBO, any chance of fixing either watch? :)

+1. I was trying to work out how to post the image but I have one of these and it does the job. £20 on Amazon.

The illuminating light doesn't stay on for very long when you press the button, but you just press it again. The strap will inevitably break, as did the one on my last Casio, so it will become a pocket watch! I have a multi function Timex tidal watch I wear occasionally, but the Casio does all I want of it.

+2 I have one of these. Use it everyday as well as sailing. 2 years now. No problems. It loses 3 seconds every 6 months. Regular as clockwork!

100 quid on a watch??

Havent spent that much on all the watches Ive owned in the past 30 years.

Cheapest Casio, replace about three years when strap breaks from fiddling with it. Keeps good enough time for a transatlantic with sextant. Tops. :D

I bought the same £20 from Argos. The strap snapped from the crown, very flimsy IMO. It's now stuck on the bulkhead

I started looking because I want to replace my cheap "every day" one. Was very surprised at the prices. £100 is nothing compared with the price of some.

I might wait until Lidl next have watches on offer although that is rather going to the opposite extreme.

For the past ten years I've worn either a Tag Heuer, or a Suunto diving watch. Both have linked metal straps, mand neither has snapped. I'm not suggesting you spend lots of money on a watch, but can't you get a cheap Casio with a metal strap?

I bought a S/S Casio, waterproof to 100m or deeper than my bathwater anyway, one with a stainless steel strap that locks closed and cannot accidentally fall off does all I need . Bought it for about 30 squids from the 'watch Man' on Lymington market, had it 4 years plus now and still going strong, at the time it was half the price it would have been from a regular store.Worth asking the Watch Man as he knows what yotties want and will suggest a solution.

For many a year of trials motorcycle riding, sailing, DIY, clumsy-young-git etc etc etc I have used fabric straps that thread through both retaining pins. That way, if one pin detaches the watch isn't dropped/lost. They fasten with Velcro and I have never
had a strap fail. Highly recommended, dirt cheap and come in either funky designs or plain colours.
