Which sun hat for a flybridge boat at speed?

I lost my umpteenth baseball cap overboard last week, blown off by the wind blast at 25kts. Anyone got any suggestions for a more suitable type of hat that will stay on my head at 25kts and yet is light and comfortable to wear in Med temps? I've tried those sailing caps with a clip but if you're wearing a collarless t shirt the clip doesn't stretch and the hats tend to be quite heavy anyway

Whats the point of a hat if you wear it backwards? Surely it won't keep the sun off your eyes then!

I had same problem Mike, but found the Musto's with the clip worked well, if you don't have a collar to clip it too then, if it does come off, treat it like MOB practise!

Just as well I happened along. I can vouch for the headgear below.

I have just finished teaching in the Gulf and wore this hat everyday - it was essential! The temperatures make the Med seem cold! It is a great bit of kit, light and comfortable and the draw string strap keeps it firmly planted on the bonce.

Cost £15 from local chandlery in the UK and worth every penny!

Every time you look at the wake..........another one gone :D


I use these , crimp onto thin shock cord or braided nylon.
Thread them through your baseball cap (vent hole or thread through the label)

About 1ft of cord and job done !
clips also come in gold plated which look great :)
shock cord all sorts of colours :)

Of course you could try something like this, the wind should turn the rota causing a down draft to hold it on.

Good question , I have lost hats and raybans , over the side " batting" at over. 30 knots.
Latest plan - took a knife to hat made two holes to thread string and make chin strap, also tend to tie down specs,s ,
Thing is you look daft in S o F when you arrive at fuel pontoon , not the glitzy brochure image especially in have red nose with white cream on.

It has to be a baseball cap for speed - worn backwards for aerodynamic efficiency if required.
Make your own securing device from light cord and a couple of clothes pegs - you can make the cord long enough to clip on your tee-shirt collar. You can even have two cords for when you want to go really fast!

I've not worn one but would have thought a Tilley had would suffer from rim-lift (is that a recognised millinery term?) at speed. I wear a Musto with clip but can't say I've suffered from any blow-off (another techie term). Perhaps my neck is short allowing plenty or slack for the tie and clip.

Thanks Solitaire, I've ordered one. I'm also going to order a lightweight Tilley and see which one I like best. In both cases, at least the cord should stop them disappearing overboard

I have learn't something here. I had always associated such terms with other areas :eek:
 
I count myself very lucky if I do six knots in my boat, so hat blowing off there is not a problem. But I've been in through Gibraltar (not in my own boat) against a 50-knot wind once, and my Tilley hat stayed on. The instructions show how to set up the cord as a tensioner around the back of your head, apparently based on what the Mounties do with theirs (Tilley is Canadian).

You can also clip the sides up, which both "reefs" the brim area and stops the front lifting.

Not making any comment on appearance; I know some people do think they look daft.
