WHICH SPEAKERS SHOULD I BUY?

I think mention of this was made recently but I can't find it.
I'm intending on having speakers for my radio/mp3 player inside where they will not get directly wet.
What type/make really good quality speakers would be advised...SWMBO really likes classical music and I'm a jazz enthusiast so we would go the extra £'s for a really good sound.

Cruical thing is you get something to match the impedance of the amp, I think most car type units are 4 ohms, as are most speakers intended to go in cars. Also make sure the speaker is rated at leat the power of the amp.

beyond that, the world is your oyster, you needn't lmit yourself to in-car systems, particularly if you want decent sound! a decent pair of hifi speakers may well give you better quality, as the box is designed specifically. With car speakers you have to mount them somewhere yourself which plays a big a role in the quality as the 'driver'... hence why Volvos have a good rep for sound systems, they design the speakers into the car, rather than just dropping in a few drivers and hoping for the best...

Considering your requirements, I'd suggest to look at Sonance Mariner.
Not cheap, but you get what you pay for.
I wouldn't go for normal home speakers, anyway.
Most of them would rust in no time, even if installed inside.
 
Cheapest way to upgrade your sound system is to drink six cans of lager or a half bottle of whisky....after either of these your present system will sound brilliant. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Another solution is to buy a set of wireless speakers from Maplins then you can move them around the boat...or with some ingenuity ...even have them on the beach with you
 
If she like clasical music, then I don't think the quality of MP3 will be up to it. Its a bit like listening to Clasical on DAB. The sound is very thin - perhaps some sound expert could explain why its sounds so flat. Good FM and CD's knock the spots off it.

Both MPEG 1 Audio Layer 2 (Musicam, as used in DAB) and Layer 3 (MP3) use lossy compression.

They have models of human hearing to work out which bits of the Audio it can remove e.g. if there's a loud component at 500Hz, low volumes at 440 Hz won't be heard so can be removed. A bang prevents you from hearing before and after the bang etc..

The lower the data rate you want, the more that is removed. At some point it will affect the audio quality.

So I won't be getting an Ipod then! Wagner will not sound good on it!!! Bit of a shame really as they look ideal - and considering the space my CD's take up on the boat.... I had heard that most of Europe had ditched DAB as being a crap technology - so when are the thousands of sets bought in the UK going to be made obsolete?????
 
We use an iPod and to be quite honest the sound quality is absolutely fine for our listening of various music plus the Admirals boy band rubbish.
The iPod is plugged into a Sony Marine Xplod, we have 2 Bose marine speakers outside and we have just changed the internal speakers for a couple of very cheap speakers from Maplin http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=37987 as the original one fitted were next to useless.
I have actually been very impressed with the sound quality for such cheap speakers and if they disintegrate within 12 months then at that price its not a problem.
If your budget allows go with Bose if not I can recommend these cheapo's!
 
Sorry to be so cloth-eared, but I use speakers out of old (CRT)tellys. They have the power and, more importantly, don't have much of an external magnetic field (Because that would distort the picture). I mount them onto bulkeads or other substantial bits of boat, for resonance.
We've got stereo across the boat for the helm, and along the boat in the salon, and the compass still knows where to point.
 
Infinity make an excellent range of speakers for car use which should be suitable. I have had them retrofitted to my last 3 cars.

I have looked at the Maplin speakers along with others mentioned this week by others. I am seriously thinking along Maplin lines as they have a store fairly close to me. I'm very hands on so no problem to change occassionally if they die.
