Which sine wave inverter to buy?

I want to fit an inverter to my yacht and have decided an instrument of around 1000W of pure sinewave power will be adequate as the max load is likely to be half of that. When researching the market I find that they fall into 2 price brackets; roughly £200 and approximately double that with the Sterling at £550. In the past I have subscribed to "you get what you pay for." However the difference is so great I begin to wonder if it applies in this case. Does anyone have any experience with the cheapos?

I have a Maplin inverter on board, fitted five years ago and no problems so far with it and we love aboard so it get a lot of use. They have a pure sine wave one here www.maplin.co.uk/maplin-12v-pure-sinewave-1000w-inverter-388096 for about £175.

Most people find portable battery powered devices are adequate for this type of activity.....

I fitted a 700 watt inverter from Argos about 3 yrs ago and it's been fine. I only use it for charging the laptop, kindle, mobiles and the odd power tool such as a sander(300watt) and angle grinder(500 watt). It's not pure sine wave but works fine. If you are going to use things like a microwave you may need pure sine wave. But for the money I could burn 4 of then out for the price of a posh one. What are you going to use it for? Mine is a simple installation, I just bolted it under the chart table, with a fuse in line. Remember the fuse is to protect the wire feeding the inverter.
