Hi guys,

It's sunny and chilly in Rome today. I'm planning on spending a few months in the Caribbean early next year and then cruising the med in the summer. Most of my contacts are in Italy and Cuba. What's the best solution for my cellphone. Any info or suggestions/pointers greatly appreciated.

TIA

Most Caribbean providers use GSM, so taking an unlocked European phone and buying a local prepay SIM is probably the least expensive and problematic way to do it.

Google GYMSIM. No roaming charges and cheap long distance calls. Have had one two years and it works pretty well for voice calls and texts, no data though. You get a UK number.

The UK number is probably an Isle of Man or a Channel Islands number, (or even a Personal Number that looks like a UK mobile). Be aware that if people call you on these numbers, it almost certainly costs them a lot more than they/you expect, and they usually dont fall into a call package's "free numbers", (mobile or landline).

GYMSIM say it doesnt:

but I would check your prefix, (the 07xxx bit), against BTs list, and make sure. I've used a few of these, (not GYMSIM), and incoming calls have always cost the caller more than expected.
