Which Samsung Tablet for navigation?

Hi Slimrick do you have to buy the Navionics app twice for a pad and the Samsung or does one licence work? I have it on my pad but tend to keep that below so just wondered if worth a look at a tablet as well?
Yes, you need to buy it twice, but the cost of the Samsung + Navionics going over board is still less than an ipad going for a swim :)

So...in a nutshell..what we need for a plotter is a low-lowish cost reasonable quality 10 inch tablet with built in GPS and decent battery life that won't cause too many tears if it takes swimming lessons.

Lets say under £250, but ideally under £200

I personally find a 7inch screen a bit small, but at a pinch a Hudl is the best 'low cost' option I've seen so far. At £60 for a refurb or £99 for new its a hard act to beat. The Samsungs are measurably better machines but cost a fair bit more.

I use a Tab 3 8" very good, I think it is better than my Garmin 3005, Curry's have it for sale for £159.99, or you can get the Tab 4 7" for the same money, more pixels etc. I would expect if you trawl the internet, you will pay less, as always! I have GPS Nautical, Navionics and Plan2Nav (Cchart) they all perform well.

So does the Tab 3 come with GPS built in and working ? The spec is not entirely clear as it says "GPS + GLONASS available" which means sweet nothing to me..except it hints it might be an add on facility

Yes GPS is standard. Watched the progress of the ferry across the channel on the tablet!

Yes GPS works provided you turn it on! GLONASS is I believe the Russian or the European system.

So is the switch on in 'settings' and therefore obvious to me or somewhere more subtle I'm unlikely to find. I only ask as there are a few on ebay quite close to me that were probably free as part of smartphone deals and being sold on, so I'm quite interested.

I have just started using a galaxy Tab with an 8" screen and wifi only. I can confirm that the gps works fine, the display is clear and the Navoinics is intuitive in use. Previously I have used both a chart plotter and pc and it compares favourably with both. By using Samsung you are using a mass market platform that Navioics will ensure their software runs on OK and will fix pretty quickly any problems if they occur. If you use a more obscure make that may not be the case although you may save money.

The Hudl I have (early one) has a very poor gps, maybe they have fixed it now but I would suggest that if anyone gets one to check it is working properly and return it for a swop if you are not completely confident you have a good one.
