The trouble with all the diving knives I looked at is their dagger like appearance. The thought of stabbing myself on a pitching deck does not appeal too much.

Folding knives like the Gerber also slip nicely into a pocket and are quite flat so you do not chip bones if you sit down with one left in your back trouser pocket.

It is not feasible to wear a diving knife on your ankle while sailing, is it?

Some multitools are useless. Got one free with £30 of petrol a couple of years back, painfull to use and dangerous to boot.
But a properly designed one from one of the major manufacturers can be incredably useful. Look for the ones where you can access a large number of the tools using only one hand. With my wave I can get the important stuff that you might need in a hurry, the knifes and the pliers, with one hand. So you really can use it on a bouncing foredeck.

It's also a dam sight easier than a full toolbox to throw in a kit bag when crewing for someone else.

If you have a folding blade then you need it to lock otherwise there could be injury if using it in a hurry or in a tricky situation. But also, a folding blade has to be opened - if you need something to hand to cut a sheet or halyard, to free a sail in an emergency or free yourself or someone else, then you want it quickly to hand.

Whether or not to strap it to your ankle is a personal choice, there is usually a choice of attachment. The UK kinfe also comes with a clip (for a belt or whatever).

They don't have to be pointed. The UK can be ordered with a blunt (squared off) tip - it has uses in diving.

The point (and the hard blade that holds its sharpness) is good for gutting and filleting fish.

I have no connection with Underwater Kinetics - they just make good gear.

Another vote for the Wave

The Leatherman Wave gets my vote as a multi purpose knife/tool box in yer pocket, only problem is you also need to carry a cork screw!

If it's just a knife your after go for the yellow plastic folding Gerber. It has a blunt tip so you cut the rope and not stab yourself and will go through rope with so little trouble it's hard to believe...Something to do with the frequency of the points on the serrated blade designed to cut rope like it wasn't there :)

Just bought one of these off ebay for £23 inc pnp direct from the States, about half UK price. Friend's got one and I agree with ShipsWoofy - excellent knife.
