Which Rum?

I'm out in Hong Kong again and an old friend has generously invited me for a weekend's racing. Obviously I didn't break anything too expensive or drink too much more than my share last time I was here. Or possibly he just wants someone to help with the anchor watch on Saturday night.
I know they drink rum on board and make cocktails with it so I want to take them a bottle by way of a thank you. The only one I've ever really enjoyed is Mountgay from Barbados but I know the boat's been raced down to the Phillipines a couple of times and I suspect they got a taste for a local spirit down there. So what should I be looking out for. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to find just about anything here if I look hard enough.

Morgans Spiced!

Wonderful vanilla taste when added to cola + slice of lime (no ice)

If you can get it, Old Oak, Trinidad rum is delightful, its a golden rum with a spicy flavour. I did the Trinidad carnival (when I were a lad!) back in '74. Half a bottle of coke topped up with Old Oak was the 'refreshment' of choice.

Old Oak... I have a local shop that sells it.Doesn't seem to taste the same now... When I was in Trinidad in '75 a round for the five of us was a bottle of Old Oak, a bucket of ice and five bottles of coke.

Best rum ever- Ron Zacapa Centenario

I bought a bottle of rum in Bombay about ten years ago, called something like Old Monk. Completely undrinkable, even to an enthusiast! Anyone else come across this one?

At the end of the day it is all a matter of personal taste, unless you know what they like you can go horribly wrong. I learnt about rum in a 'blue suit' so the likes of Pusser's, Woods etc are good for me, though a few years back when I used to get invited to the Scotch Whisky Society in Leith they often had a Rum and most were delightfull. I have also been force fed Indian Rum and survived.

Why not ask them what they would like, I have been embarrassed by people buying me malts which I DO NOT like,m for example I have been known to add ginger ale to Glenfiddich to make it drinkable.

I'm an Old Monk enthusiast having lived in India in the earlty 90's when any imported spirits were wildly expensive. Old Monk was a perfectly acceptable end to the day. I always pick a couple of bottles up when there.

Whatever you do, do NOT buy Morgan's Spiced at the moment. They have some production issues at the moment...I bought a faulty bottle/batch last weekend. Couple of pints of Doom Bar in the club bar, then over to the boat with a mate I was sailing with, a freshly purchased bottle of Spiced in tow. I'm not sure if the cap did not fit properly and the stuff was evaporating past the seal in the cap, or if perhaps the glass in the bottle was out of a bad production run, and was porous, or had some form of glass bottle osmosis, however in a few hours it had all dissapeared. We were postively fuming. In fact we were absolutely steaming. To add insult to injury, the small amount that had actually made it past our lips ended up giving us a blinding headache and a somewhat backflipping tummy the next morning.

I do not expect such poor qaulity both in product and packaging from such an alledgedly reputable company, and I will be writing a letter of complaint to the good Captain himself.

Not amused.

I'm lost in admiration at the strength of your constitution!:p:p
