My big genoa has just been shredded by a gale . As all my other hank on sails are pretty old and well used i was thinking of replacing the lot with a roller reefing system.
having sailed 12,000 miles with hank on sails i feel the time has come to make life a bit easier....
I would appreciate any advice on reliable makes of reefing gear and any that should be avoided.

Sailspar make a continuous line system which guarantees that the line cannot snarl up or get tangled on the drum. It takes a little getting used to if you are used to a single line system, but if this is your first roller furling gear then this wouldn't be an issue.

I found it a bit awkward at first, but I wouldn't change it now. In 10,000 miles I have never had to go forward to deal wth a problem at the drum.

I second Harken. Mine has 19 seasons on the clock and is still going strong. The only problem, connecting pins on the foil segments working loose, has been solved on newer models. Bearings etc still original and in good condition.

Just to add confusion here. I have fitted a Plastimo to both of my boats & been happy with them, over a period of over 20 years!

But I do not sail great distances, I mostly potter with the family, so I picked the cheapest and have been pleased with the outcome.
