Could anybody recommend a resin based product suitable for joining the mild steel plate to cast iron bulb on the new keel of my Anderson 22? The plate slots into the bulb (approx 400kgs) and is held together with a 25mm steel dowel, with a couple of millimeters tolerance all round.

Many Thank

Nick

I can't make any recommendations for that sort of job, however contact the folks at West Epoxy Resins http://www.westsystem.com/ss/ via their "Need Help" eMail address; bottom right hand corner of the link. They also have heaps of downloads for all sorts of Epoxy jobs and do have literature on Epoxy gluing metals together. I have contacted them a few times and they always respond with good advice. There are other Epoxy glue manufacturers and there will also be alternative glue types as well I dare say. I hope this is useful to you.

Yes epoxy will be your best glue if indeed glueing is a good idea. I guess it will take any tendency to slop out.
The trick is in cleaning the metal surfaces.
Epoxy has been used for many years with a boron type substrate to repair cracks in Hercules wings and other aircraft repairs. So it will stick if the surfaces are cleaned properly. good luck olewill

I glued Aluminium angles onto our catamaran keels a good few years ago now and they are still there despite many groundings on beaches as the tides dropped.

All I did was sand the bottom and edges of the keels and sand the alloy then applied a mixture of west system epoxy resin mixed with Micro-fibres to a toothpaste consistency pushed them up and held them in place with packers and removed the material that squeezed out then removed the packing after 48 hours.

Good luck and fair winds. :)

I would use West epoxy with the high density filler
Forget the code No but Wessex resins will tell you
The most important bit will be cleanliness of the parts to achieve a bond
However, if the connection is by mechanical rather than chemical means then just fill the void with sikaflex

Might be one to ask on the Anderson owners web site as well - bet someone has had to do it already....

Seajet of this parish runs the website.. I'm sure he'll be along in a minute to comment...

Andrew Simpson glued his high aspect keel to the hull of his boat with a very strong epoxy resin. He enclosed the lead casting in a fiberglass hollow keel and glued it to another moulding that protruded from the hull bottom. There were no mechanical fastenings at all and in a 38footer the loadings can be quite high. Can't remember what he used but there was a series of articles on PBO following the building of Shindig, his boat.
