As a live-aboard half of ones life is spent servicing ones boat. The fortunate amongst us can throw money at these annoying jobs and forget about them (if this is you please ignore this survey) but for the rest of us we have to curse our way through an installation until it is complete. Quite often a five minute job turns into two days. It doesn't take a genius to work out that this thread has been inspired by such a job!

If I get enough results I might turn this into a little rant on our blog, so if you don't mind me quoting you (anonymously) please feel free to reply with further comments.

Sorting out the previous owner's/builder's cock ups/penny pinching. eg:

Ferrous fastenings.

Untinned wiring especially used above deck.

Rust marks on infrequently used storm sails.

Teak oil in all it's various forms, horrible black goo.

Unlabeled wiring.

Bodged woodwork, the orange box syndrome.

Repairs so badly done, you spend ages redoing them to an adequate standard.

Stuff installed without a single thought given to future maintainance. ie: Parts of the engine only accessible by a trained ferret.

Deck leaks, because the wretched fitting wasn't properly bedded down in the first place.

I voted for varnishing, because when we lived on our old boat I never managed to get enough coats on to not have to strip it off and start over again. Mind you now I only have two washboards to worry about, it is quite a pleasure to give them a coat of water based whatever.

Aren't alloy masts easy to maintain in the hot sun!

Airing out the bunk cushions on the foredeck. To stop rhem blowing overboard I have to lie on them. That is incredibly boring so I have to read a book.

I hate the job that should only take about an hour, but takes many, many more, because you're stuck at anchor without any decent tools.

Also, fixing the terrible repairs of prior owners is quite frustrating too.

Deck fittings because its never simple invoving taking the boat apart to get at them and then to find it doesn't cure the leak and on it goes.

Yeah. Absolutely! I'll change my mind from varnishing. A leak is the absolute worst. You can fix my leak, and I'll clean your toilets out for a month. A year!!!

You should put in trips to ATM/Bank.

To pay for all the jobs.

The trip from the summer port on the Westerschelde to the winterport in Brussels and back. Always in November and April. And the wind is always in the opposite direction. Cold. Wet.
But hey, Terneuzen is 1200€ for april-nov, Brussels is 240€ for Nov-April

The heads, I will do them for my customers, but my own rubber bits have needed replacing for two months now /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
oh and taking the tv ariel down and stowing my stuff every time I want to go for a sail,

I must have responded because I can see the results... but cant remember what I put.

Right now it would be "other" anything to do with cleaning and tidying, and packing up to go home.

I know the above is true as I spend ages on here, or doing other things, before having just less than enough time left to do any of the above.

I replied on the PBO thread but on reflection, manual holding tank pump-out, we have the kit but it's a stinky, messy, pain to do and if cash wasn't so tight I'd pay to get it done but we have to do it every two days when we're out.
