Which Oil Suction Pump for a Yanmar 3GM30?

The Pela pump should be OK.
If the tube is a bit too large for the dipstick then pop into a local petshop and buy a couple of feet of the appropriate size fish tank airation hose and fix it to the Pela's pump-out hose (Not Halfords - they are too expensive!)

Yes the Pela is good but a 6 litre one is probably bigger than you need for a 3GM. I use the smaller Pela on my 2GM as it only uses about 2 litres of oil or so. Can't image the 3GM is that much bigger. However, no reason why you should not use the bigger one.

Couple of tips.

1. As Skysail says - get the engine really hot before starting. I did the job a couple of weeks ago and ran the engine for at least 30 mins.

2. The Pela comes with a pretty long dip tube. In reality, you only need about 30/40cms of the narrow black tube. I cut mine off to about that length this year and it made it much easier.

3. Be careful you don't push the tube into the dipstick hole too far or it will bend round and essentially come back up above the oil level so you will be sucking out air!! What I do is push it in about 10 cms, pump up the Pela and it should start sucking straight away. Once you start to see/hear bubbles rather than oil, you can push it in a little further etc. It should only take a few minutes to suck out the 2+ litres.

Hope this helps

I can see a few different Pela pumps?

Do you mean this one?

Thanks.

I changed the oil on my 3GM30 about two hours ago, using that one. It takes a while for the oil to be fully drawn out, you can check it's happening by the temperature of the tube. As said above, 6 litres is really too big for this engine but that's all that was available when I bought mine. I ran the engine in gear pulling against a pontoon for 15 minutes to warm up.

Can anyone recommend one please? The dipstick hole is tiny and I have yet to find a pump with a small enough tube.

Many thanks

If the 3GM30 has about the same oil content as my VP2003, then go for the 6ltr size, as the 4ltr was too small in contents.

To prevent the plastic tube bending out of the oil if inserted too far, you can do as I have done and get a short length of 8mm copper central heating pipe (from a friendly plumber) that is long enough to protrude out of the dipstick tube, and cut a V notch in the bottom to allow an oil extraction opening.

Works well enough for me.

The total engine oil capacity of a 3GM30 is 2.6 litres but I have never managed to get this much out. The gearbox takes 0.35 litres. A full service takes something less than 2.5 litres.

The tube of my Pela is reinforced with a steel spring that is inserted into the dipstick hole. Its outer diameter is only around 4 mm. It does not bend into the sump unless pushed very hard. I doubt that an 8 mm copper pipe would fit a Yanmar dipstick

The Pela 6000 is the one I use too, I also used it on my mates 1GM10 last winter, the tube is aprox 4-5mm outer dia.
Dont worry about buying a 6ltr, you can use it on your car too.
You will see if its pumping by observing the oil level rising in the sphere, each moulded ring is a litre so you will know how much you have drawn out.
Hot oil and loads of initial pumps to build up a good vacuam will do the job.
